More Work Please!

Currently on a 25 hour contract, but depressingly enough I have less money now than I did what I didn't work (Council tax, Housing benefits and JSA).
Approximately £10pw left over after bills which isn't even enough to eat!
So, I'm going to speak with the managers tomorrow to see if I can get any additional hours (already working my days off)
What do you reckon the chances are? I think slim as the xmas rush has calmed down now. Or do you think I will have to find a second job?
Has anyone else been in a similar situation to me that could offer some advice?

Really depends on your office circumstances.in our office of approximately 60 people only 4 or 5 do overtime so Extra hours are always available.

i wouldve thought that if you are worse off financially, you would/should be entitled some sort of benefits to top up you're wages. working tax credits or whatever they call them. i would suggest you visit the C.A.B. to find out what you are entitled to. if you are not entitled, then what would be the point in working.?? you would (in my view) be completely justified in rapping you're job in if that turns out to be the case, and i would also make a point of pointing it out to the dole/media/david cameron/etc.

Due to the fact I have no sprogs I am not entitled to WTC.
Also, the main reason I am in this predicament is that despite living with 5 students I am only entitled to a 25% discount, so I am left to pay 75% of the council tax bill.
I can see why people get stuck in the benefit system for years on end having baby after baby... its a cash cow!

crazy, I tried the tax credit calculator, work 25 hours (£250) and over 25, nothing. Then 30 hours (£300) and you get £721.68 "This is the amount your household may be entitled to from 30/12/2013 until 05/04/2014. This result is only an estimate and is based on the information provided assuming you make the claim on 30/12/2013. This means the amount shown may not be your entitlement for the full year."

Sounds like you need to find somewhere cheaper to live, with working people that will share the council tax burden.

Because David Cameron told everyone that they will be better off working than being on benefit, and you know David is always right.

Then they say they have overpaid you and you end up OWING MONEY! I kid you not, this happened to me.

Tried the calculator again, add another 5 hours as self employment and you get the £714.24 from 31/12/2013 until 05/04/2014.
By buying something to sell on Ebay you become self employed, you must inform the Tax people and fill in a tax return every year.
You are liable to pay Class 4 Nat Insurance but can apply to be exempt, check it out.
Keep a basic set off accounts, read up about it, if you make a loss then claim back the tax you have paid on your RM income.
There is paper work to do, and MUST be kept upto date and do research.

If you drive you stand a better chance of increased hours. I was in 5 years before being given a full time (39 hours) contract. Stick in is the best advice I can give.

A colleague of mine actually lost out when moving from a 25 hour contract to 30 hours.
When he had the 25 hour and just worked his hours he was getting both council tax benefit and housing benefit.
Maybe it depends where you live to some extent?
