Traveling time to work at nearby DOs

Post by WornOutPosty »

I can't remember what happens here, when you work at a neighboring DO do you take traveling time off your day? So say you start at 8am you leave your house at 8am? Or is it a case of if you're getting paid travel costs you can't take your traveling time off?

you travel to your DO for your normal start time, then go from there to the new DO in your duty time, and travel back to your home do for your normal finish time

personally i would arrive at your own do and ask for a van to use for the day to get you there and back or demand a lift there and back, i wouldnt be using your own transport especially as if you are using your own car on a social domestic pleasure and commuting policy you would not be covered by your own policy as its not your "normal place of work"

Thanks, I've seen a few volunteering to go to nearby offices (we're way overstaffed) and wondered why. It seems pretty cushy going to nearby DOs as your actual working day is shorter after traveling.

If you have fully comprehensive insurance you will be covered wherever you go. There are no boundaries as to where you can and can't drive unless you specifically say so in your insurance. My insurance asks my job which is a postman it doesn't ask my office.

However if you don't want to work at other offices just turn up at your start time at your DO and ask to be picked up by a driver at the other office and then dropped back for your finish time. With the time left the chances are you won't be able to complete the walk so you will become more of a pain than a help and you won't get sent again.

If you are happy going and using your own car then work out the travel costs. I got paid 45p per mile. On one occasion I travelled 16 miles to another office. Multiply this by 10 trips in a week and it turns out to be a nice little earner.

All insurers have different levels of cover.
Some Social Domestic & Pleasure policies don't even cover normal commuting but even those that do almost always stipulate that it is your "normal" or "permanent" place of work only.

Once you have arrived at your normal place of work any further work related use will require business insurance.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

actually not, most insurance companies only offer cover to and from your permanent place of work not to other offices for that you would need business cover

Social, Domestic and Pleasure (SD&P)
With this class of use, you are covered to drive your car for Social, domestic and pleasure use, excluding commuting. This means you can use it to go shopping, collect children from school, visit friends in another part of the country or even go on a motoring holiday. With this class of use, however, you are not covered for driving to the station on your way to work, driving to your workplace itself, or for using the car in any other way connected with work.

Social, Domestic, Pleasure and Commuting (SDP&C)
Under this class of use, you can do all of the things you can do under SD&P, but you and anyone else named on your policy can also use the car to drive to and from your normal place of work.

Social, Domestic and Pleasure including Business Use
This covers you and and other permitted, named driver* on the policy, for all of the uses described above in SD&P, it also, however, allows you to use the vehicle in connection with your job. This might include driving it to visit a customer, or a business meeting but it does not cover you for delivery work of any kind and the business use is restricted to yourself and your spouse or civil partner only.

These are the only classes of business that we offer on Your Cover. We do not offer cover for:

Carriage of goods or passengers for hire or reward (courier business)
Commercial traveling – using the vehicle for door to door sales or traveling sales
All classes of business exclude: competitions, pacemaking, racing, rallies, trials, speed testing, use for motor trade purposes.

I would never use my own car to travel to another DO for a poxy 45p a mile. It costs in fuel alone an average of 20p, then you have depreciation for extra mileage on the car, risk of damage to tyres, suspension etc and bodywork when parked. Then of course that extra 5,000 miles you do a year may mean that the car needs a cambelt or the cambelt breaks before you can afford to trade er in. It would be OK I suppose if you had a worthless car that wasn't too bad on fuel.
