1. Amber warning of Rain

A spell of heavy rainfall is expected to affect parts of southern England and South Wales during Monday. This will fall onto saturated ground and lead to a risk of some flooding. Gale to severe gale force winds will be an added hazard, with the potential for very strong gusts across coastal areas.
The public should be prepared for the likelihood of some significant disruption due to the combined hazards of heavy rainfall and high winds.
The rainfall should clear southeast England on Tuesday morning, with the winds moderating from the west.
A deep area of low pressure will sweep an active frontal system across England and Wales on Monday. This will bring 20-40 mm rainfall quite widely, with over 60 mm likely across parts of the high ground of southern England and South Wales. Falling onto saturated ground, this will bring the risk of both surface water and river flooding.
Meanwhile, south to southwesterly winds will increase with gusts 70-80 mph likely around exposed coasts, particularly along the English Channel. Further inland, gusts of 50-60 mph are likely through the amber area, with a lower risk of gusts reaching 70 mph - more especially across southeast England during the evening.

Clearing skies during this evening, after today's showers, will allow road temperatures to dip below freezing which will lead to some icy stretches. Further wintry showers are expected to parts of Highland, Argyll and Western Central where there could be 1-2cm of snow on the highest routes.
Drivers should be aware of the risk of difficult driving conditions due to ice and snow and the possibility of some minor travel disruption.
Showers will continue to affect the west of Scotland overnight Sunday and into Monday. Road temperatures will fall below freezing where skies clear between showers. This will allow icy stretches to form. Further east there is still the risk of risk of icy stretches on roads which have been wet by today's showers. On the higher routes in the west, above 200 metres, snow accumulations of 1-2cm are expected by Monday morning.

Another intense area of low pressure is expected to track close to the UK during Monday and into Christmas Eve. Associated heavy rain is expected to affect southern parts of England and Wales where the ground remains saturated following earlier heavy rainfall.
Very strong south to southwesterly winds will accompany the rain, especially along exposed coasts and hills where gales or severe gales are likely.
The public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding and possible disruption to transport due to a combination of rain and wind. This is an update to the Alert issued on Saturday.
The very unsettled period of weather is expected to continue with another intense area of low pressure developing over the Atlantic and tracking close to the northwest of the UK. Current indications are that southern England and south Wales are most at risk from further heavy rainfall, with the timing of the clearance of rain being the main uncertainty for this period - the rain probably clearing southeast England on Tuesday morning.

A band of rain will move north across Dumfries and the Borders on Monday. This rain will fall onto already saturated ground increasing the risk of some localised flooding.
The public should be aware of the potential for some minor disruption.

5. Yellow warning of Snow

An area of sleet and snow will move up from the south during Monday afternoon, particularly affecting some of the higher routes over Central and northwest Scotland. This snow will be accompanied by strong winds with the snow blowing around in the wind with some drifting possible over the higher routes.
The public should be aware of the potential for some disruption to travel.
A deep area of low pressure developing over the eastern Atlantic will spread its fronts up across the UK on Monday bringing a period of snow to much of central and northern Scotland. 2 to 5cm is possible above around 300 metres, with larger amounts at greater altitudes - this drifting in the strong winds.
