Hi, I am/was happy at Royal mail as a post woman, however Overtime is a real issue. I will happily work over my time if the workload requires it, however its becoming a nightmare trying to claim back that overtime.

My manager now says we have to tell him how much overtime we want before we got out!? you couldn't make this stuff up. sure we can estimate to a certain extent, but not the exact amount of time. there is so many variables each day (traffic, hold ups, signed fors, parcels, writing out dockets, PDA problems, waiting for partner, or them waiting for me to finish loop etc)

I am getting really stressed and fed up, I must be owed so many hours of unpaid overtime.

As I said I'm happy to do the overtime, but if I'm not being paid then I will begin cutting off, which I really don't want to do.

What will be done about this?

Can you not give a worst case scenario of how long you think it will take? That way you will only ever be 'on time'. If it ends up taking less by 5 or 10mins then you gain

Just over estimate how long it will take you over. If you think it will be a hour says hour and half and always finish off with a cup of tea.

simple solution get underpaid on your overtime then tell the DOM your taking your time back at the end of the week ie saturday so say they owe you two hours say you are finishing two hours early on saturday not a thing they can do its called flexibility they either pay you or they have to give you the time by the end of the week.This sort of thing is rife in my office so my solution is CUT OFF and DON'T go over and they get told straight why i wont go over cos you twat face never pay me for it.

Forgot to say i work to my time monday tuesday prep d2d if im back early work to time wed,thurs,fri, and then get a flier saturday cos managers have done one long before i get back.

I always get the DOM/Lino to tell me what he is willing to offer for me to complete it - if I don't think its worth it, its his problem as I wont do it. Of course, to get someone else to do it they need to drive back out etc and they know it will cost them more in the end so they tend to give a good offer to me!

...well the nice lady or gent from the 'just say it team' will be in touch to reassure you that your complaint will be looked at, it will then come all the way down the chain of command to....guess who?

Yes the DOM , the very person... who made you contact 'just say it' in the first place due to his own incompetence in making you stressed and fed up by not paying you the hours you worked for and for which you are owed!

I can't understand a DOM asking "how long's a piece of string?". In our office, unless we tell in advance we're finishing at our time, it's assumed we'll work until we finish. We simply come back and write our excess time down on his sheet on his desk, and get paid for it. Seldom any quibbles, unless somebody's signed out early say on Tuesday and then moans when it's debited against their time over on Wed/Thu. OT is done on a weekly basis so even if you finished early every day the week before it has no relevance the week after.

Overtime should be done on a daily basis. Each day stands alone. They cannot claw back time from previous days when you have been under. There is no agreement in Royal Mail in any agreement or the new agreement that allows for banking of hours. Flexibility is a different subject.
