Poem for new starters...

After being laid off last year,
at Royal Mail I did appear.
Off I went for an induction,
the next day there were ructions.

The DOM said "I don't care what you were told"
"don't believe the bollocks you were sold."
Off I went to my 'trainer'
who tried to make it plainer.

"Don't worry the DOMs a dork"
"I'll now show you your walk."
So off we went to the frame,
while he chatted and asked my name.

I stood there and was utterly amazed,
560 slots and they weren't fazed.
Into my boots I then sunk,
when surrounded by flats and junk.

He said "Do you think you can hack it?",
"just wait until you see the packets".
Eventually we drove out of the gate,
and I was resigned to my fate.

Armed with my pouch and PDA,
FFS! - can I do this every day?
Off to my next call I strode,
my trolley faithfully towed.

Alas, the bastards had a packet,
so I duly unzipped my jacket.
Out came my PDA, slip and pen,
The buggers aren't in again....

On this went for for ages,
like walking through the Yellow Pages.
Eventually we got back through the gate,
I can sod-off home! Great!

Trainer said "Oi! not so fast.."
"let's throw some households off last".
At half-three I left and went home,
joints aching and tired to the bone.

I threw off the high-viz I had to borrow,
and collapsed down thinking of tomorrow.
But there's no answer in self pity,
and park and loop maybe shitty.

Then I thought of my time on the dole,
and what damage that does to the soul.
It was then I stood up with frown,
carry on - the bastards won't get me down.

Now I've done more than a year,
and not without an ache or a tear.
The DOM can moan and laze in his chair,
but I made it - I'm still there!

Yes duly edited, it's a bit of a bind how I typed it without gaps.
Glad you people liked it, I had a spare hour so made it up remembering how I started at RM etc.



P.S. I agree, once you've passed the pain and stress barrier it does become a lifestyle as well as a job, and you seldom see yourself doing anything else in the future.

Great poem...I love it

Reminds me of my first week in a boiling hot summer. Came home from my first day on delivery and just collapsed dehydrated and exhausted with thoughts of trying to get my old job back. Now, more than 10 years on I'm still in the job
