Extra help at Mail Centres but not at Delivery Offices

Can someone explain why Mail Centres get extra staff at Christmas but Delivery Offices don't? Well, ours doesn't anyway. OK, leave is barred in December so we have guys without walks who do just packet deliveries but there's still too much work for us to reasonably do during normal working hours.

There must be thousands of students/unemployed out there who would be glad of a few quid extra, so rather than assuming we'll work overtime why not bring a few of them in? Our office relies on guys doing overtime, doing early sorting from as much as two hours before their usual start time.

That's Christmas in a delivery office, they expect the existing staff to pick up the extra and claim OT. In my office quite a few don't want any OT so stuff is constantly being rolled over to the next day. If we just had 1 extra pair of packet drivers we'd be pretty much clear every day, but it's not going to happen as the area manager is constantly moaning about the budget - despite MC's getting tens of thousands of extra staff!

We only got any packet drivers at the beginning of last week, apparently that's when our pressure started despite the MC pressure starting 2 weeks earlier!

What exactly do you want them to do in a DO?
Put them on the ips? Impractical
Drive without doing a changeover or pay for them to do a changeover so they can work for a couple of weeks? Impractical
Send them out on delivery? Possibly but only after the proper security checks have been done.

But then those that rely on the overtime at this time of year would be complaining that RM is taking on casuals and they are losing the right to earn a few extra quid and maintain a reasonable level of local earnings.

Steady on! How would that work really? Delivery office sending back mail meant for local delivery to Mail Centres... Even if it happens it must be so miniscule that you as a aMC staff will not be in a position to recognise or see the effect.

Having said the above, I cannot understand why local redirections are sent back to the MC in my office despite us having separate pigeon holes for them...

Cant read them properly - come on! You are having a laugh - the speed at which we have to sort to get out and the fact that we are all working flexibly will mean that at this time of the year*, there is just too little time or even local knowledge to decipher Hieroglyphs...

Anyways, I remember doing deliver at SE15 back in the days and about 3 years ago, the largest MC/DO in our county was using Christmas Casuals (Royal Mail) for delivery or within the delivery office.

They could take on more casuals at the mailcentre and send the mailcentre staff out to the Delivery Offices...
I'm aware that this has no practical value but it would at least brighten up the DO at christmas having some jolly overweight bearded old men lumbering about the office in a red fleece.

Personally I think Christmas casuals are far more honest than the majority of dishonest and unscrupulous managers we have at Royal Mail.

Hehe, the fullest boxes in our IPS frames are always the missort boxes. It's as though the people who work in the local MC know absolutely nothing about any areas of the city.
