You approach your supervisor [D.O.M.] you say " Can I have aword. Ive made a mistake etc etc etc your excuse could be that you were extremley busy. Be totally honest.. if your dom has an ounce of decency they will tell you not to worry and make sure it never happens again. Learn from the mistake and be sure you safeguard all your mail

Just be honest about it. Yuor only human after all and we all mess up in some way. Make the union rep aware also so he can advise and assist you if needed. Dont try and blag it away as you will get found out.

I think this is the sort of thing that everybody does ONCE, although many probably wont admit it.

I'm 99% sure I posted mine, I was still pretty new and had the letter in the regular bundle and just forgot about it. (Usual story next to no training - had no idea that i was supposed to keep them separate and on my person at all times)

As soon as I got back I fessed up, explained what happened, and the Dom at the time was OK about it, but he did say "most managers would conduct you for this"

Never heard any more about it, so I guess i at least managed to post it to the right house!

Keep them on your person at all time!? Must say I've never heard that before. I had one yesterday, an Amazon parcel, you couldn't even get in a pouch, it was extremely large, so what would you do about that?

This only applies to hct or lwt deliveries and if its too big they don't carry it.

What's more serious, losing a special or signing for one and posting it? The latter has happened other day and was wondering what the guy could expect to happen.

There is no hiding a failed special, the manager gets a report of all failed specials. Its then just a matter of following the track to see who had it last, if the scan shows it was given to the postman then the buck stops there. Just be honest, that's the best way forward. As I said there is no of hiding it.

A bloke with 40 years service was sacked for signing for a special in my office last year. It's not worth doing irrespective of the circumstances which may influence a postie to try it. In this particular case it was the recipient of the item and not the sender who complained to RM. Posties are not doing anybody a "favour", least of all themselves, by signing for specials, recordeds and tracked items when the recipients are out. Sorry to be so blunt.

Yesterday I thought I'd lost a special. Went back to the house, asked them to open their box. Nope not in there. I then remembered it was for their neighbour, but they had moved. I'd redirected it LOL. All I could think was I'm sacked. We are only human and at this time of year mistakes will be made.

I put my first one through a letterbox a few weeks ago (I hadn't missed it, I'd written out a 739 and put the special through instead of that

). I signed for it myself and told the manager when I got back. There were no complaints and no issues, I spoke to the householder a few days later, apologised and he was fine about it.

There's no need for a manager to be a tw@ about it.

it had fallen out of my tray on the way back to the office in the back of the van. I'd scanned it as not delivered and put it in my returns tray which was full. Must have fallen into the van. I hear the locker guy isn't happy but it's an honest mistake this time of year

Most items are sent Special Delivery because they're important, valuable, and/or urgent. If the customer does not receive said item then a whole load of bad s**t could result ? ? ? Guard your SDs as you would your passport and travel money when on holiday and you'll not go wrong.
Mistakes happen though and the only course of action is to inform your manager. Often, when on HCT or LWT jobs I am issued with large Special Delivery items. Refuse them if you think safety and security is going to be an issue and don't listen to the person doling them out when they say... "but you have a trolly !" Speak to your manager if they are intransigent.
