Ice will readily form on untreated surfaces from dusk on Friday. In addition snow showers will continue across the Northern Isles.
A band of mainly light and patchy snow will also push in from the west during Friday evening. It will slowly turn to rain at most levels overnight as milder air pushes in from the Atlantic, but a short period of rain falling onto frozen surfaces is possible adding to the ice risk. Locally 1 to 2 cm of snow is expected, perhaps 5 cm over some of the higher routes.
The public should be aware of difficult driving conditions with potential disruption to travel.
The very cold arctic airstream continues to affect the northeast bringing further snow showers for the rest of Friday. Thereafter a frontal system will push slowly and erratically northeastwards across northern Britain on Friday evening and night . As it encounters the cold air ahead of it, some snow is likely, giving a cm or two in places. The frontal system will introduce milder Atlantic air to all mainland areas by late Saturday morning. However, as this happens there is a risk of some rain falling onto frozen surfaces adding to the risk of icy stretches.
Note that snow may affect Shetland into Saturday afternoon.
