Philippines Disaster Appeal

We have all seen the harrowing pictures on the TV of the crisis unfolding in the Philippines following the devastating typhoon. It is clear that there is a need for urgent, immediate aid and ongoing assistance with reconstruction for many years to come. The graphic TV reports demonstrate the need for a sustained effort to provide food, water and medical supplies in the short term and major rebuilding in the longer term.

The Union has long standing links to union brothers and sisters in the Philippines. Branches and conference delegates will remember that Pete Pinlac of the MKP communications union addressed the General conference of the CWU in 2006 describing the dangerous struggles he and his members face on a daily basis.

The Disaster Emergency Committee in the UK has already received substantial donations but there is a continuing need for more. CWUHA has already pledged a donation of £1,000 and the CWU is urging all Branches and individual members to send donations to the Union as a matter of urgency. All cheques should be made out to CWU and sent to Angela Niven in the International Department at CWU HQ.

The total collected will be reported to Branches and forwarded to an appropriate charity nominated by the NEC.
