delivery staff, new allowance?
Been on walks for 21 years and we're getting more and more piled on us. What does everyone think about a weekly supplement for delivery staff for carry tonnes of shite around? It is after all us that are out in all kinds of weather pushing, pulling, carrying and to be quite honest knackering our bodies! Has the union/anyone ever explored such a supplement? I mean we work our arses to a stand still every week, we get shite upon daily and are probably the worst paid staff in RM!!!

The Delivery Supplement - which a lot of people think is for delivering D2Ds - is exactly what you describe.hazzeem025 wrote:Been on walks for 21 years and we're getting more and more piled on us. Also hardly the worst paid staff. In our grade deliveries receive the same basic pay as everyone else except MDeC (who get less than we do), and on top of that we get a delivery supplement worth around 55p an hour

Re: delivery staff, new allowance?
The delivery supplement wants to be looked at & improved in my opinion. As RM increase the limit of d2ds more & more, so making more & more profit, our supplement should increase. Yes, we stopped being paid per d2d, but this was incorporated with the early shift allowance that we no longer get either. We were getting £10 a contract plus early shift allowance, people are now doing in excess of 3-7 d2ds a week now, so losing a substantial amount of money.

Re: delivery staff, new allowance?
Lets face facts the delivery supplement was a replacment for d2d payment and every member of delivery staff are worse off for it.And the lowest paid staff which are the part timers are even worse off as theirs is pro rata.i agree something needs to be looked at.

I was under the impression mail centre workers get the delivery supplementTrueBlueTerrier wrote:The Delivery Supplement - which a lot of people think is for delivering D2Ds - is exactly what you describe.hazzeem025 wrote:Been on walks for 21 years and we're getting more and more piled on us. Re: delivery staff, new allowance?
Your impression is in error. There is a different supplement for Mail Centres and IIRC it started at £8 instead of £20.60. Other functions have their own supplements, ours in Deliveries is the highest IIRC.Acca Dacca wrote:I was under the impression mail centre workers get the delivery supplementTrueBlueTerrier wrote:The Delivery Supplement - which a lot of people think is for delivering D2Ds - is exactly what you describe.hazzeem025 wrote:Been on walks for 21 years and we're getting more and more piled on us. Re: delivery staff, new allowance?
I have worked in Mail Centres where people could do 11 hours work - no sweat! It is a fairly easy job and it is in no way comparable to delivery; apart from the specialists, machine operators and likes.
In fact, they had to bring in a rest scheme to stop people doing 3 straight shifts - that is how easy it can be. What also gets me is their idea of Scheduled Attendance- it can be a bit of joke; where there is very little work, they still attend and get paid (the same with MDEC) . So it does grate when part-timers at MDEC can get loads of Shares for doing easy OT whereas doing delivery/walking OT is just so much harder especially on the body.
We are at the very end of the line and we work one-man-one-job with lots of contact with Customers, face lots of hazards and often directly accountable. I think we deserve a whole lot more than the paltry delivery supplement which is pro-rata. Even if someone does plenty of OT, the delivery supplement is still the same - why?
Delivery staff are being mugged off, by all, as well being bullied and harassed to get the mail out including working over contract hours. Mail Centre sometimes just pack up and go home even when the job is not fully ready - meaning we get unsequenced mail or get mail late.
This is not a moan about Mail Centre workers but an argument for why we deserve more. We keep hearing that delivery supplement is not for D2Ds but at the same time the Union was ready to claim credit for capturing all of the D2D money...
* Yes, I understand that we get paid even when we are not delivering D2D but that is an anomaly - you should only be paid for the work you do and also for how productive you are.

Re: delivery staff, new allowance?
each persons take on it will be different
putting aside the wording of it, it did replace the d2d payment,
to me its fine as i started getting around £18 pw extra as before when as a reserve, the persons who i'd be covering usually said to leave them as they wanted more cash,
i didn't mind because i'd sooner be having an extra
or 2 at home, or even better if the bird was at home
1 lad lost out big time as his duty had over 1000 calls and would usually get about £60, flip side was a lad who mainly did business calls and usually got about £10
so not everyone on deliveries lost out
1 thing that is unfair is the 20 hour staff, working with a 39 doing exactly the same work for half the money?
and i've still yet to meet 1 who refuses to prep them, i know i wouldn't do it.

Re: delivery staff, new allowance?
Interesting replies. What I mean after reading the comments is, we do the hardest, most physical job in the company in all and every weather. We go home and fall asleep because of the physicality of the work we do. We're the ones whose bodies are going to be battered because of this job, that's if peoples bodies aren't already battered. Yes I think that delivery staff should get a supplement for the physicality of the job, on top of that bag of shite supplement that replaced d2d/early start payments.

Re: delivery staff, new allowance?
I think there is an argument for increasing pay for delivery staff to reflect the difficulty of the role.
I think there is also an argument for increasing meal relief to 60 mins(at least 40 mins must be taken during duty time) in line with mailcentres which will also help to protect/increase full-time jobs.
