As best as they can and the cost is dependant on the hours you're contracted to.

Contacted to 25 hours , temp 3 months... Hoping to get kept on , im leaving my permanent job , sounds crazy i no but the moneys better at RM.

'cutting off' is when you work to your contracted hours and ends bringing back (or leaving behind) some work/mail/packets that you could not finish within the time allocated for your duties...

There is a procedure for cutting off but it is not always the same in every office. But the most crucial thing is to let your manager know if you are going to be cutting (not able to finish).

But as a newbie, you will struggle to start and will most probably not be able to finish. In addition, you will also struggle to estimate how much work to leave behind (if that is the procedure in your office). This is a conundrum you will have to solve with time.

Your chances of being kept on depend on how much effort you are willing to put in ? The same applies to any job nowadays. But in my 8 years of being with royal mail , . I have only known of 1 person not to have a contract renewed ( he was a complete waster ) oh. And a cut off is basically when you will not have enough time to deliver all of your walk on a certain day ( and you do not wish to work overtime ) you leave some behind and the manager gets someone else to do it.

As long as you're willing and able to do the overtime you shouldn't have any problems, the bullying and harassment only starts when people want to finish on their time.

A LOT depends on what your office is actually like and the managers who oversee it. My office is fairly small and quite friendly to be honest. The managers are on the whole fair and approachable. However a larger office 10 miles from me is a total nightmare where the manager are always dealing with harassment charges.

You are joining at the beginning of the most busy time of the year so your in at the deep end I am afraid.

Personally I would join the union as soon as. Not sure how much it is for part time but should be no more than a Costa coffee a week. It would earn you respect from your fellow posties to support any industrial action and choose not to work on those days.

In our office 2 part timers have been made full time in the past 6 months. One guy was in desperate need of overtime and has a "I will do anything" approach. He is well liked by both staff and managers and is now one of the top overtime earners. At a guess I would say he clears about £450+ most weeks.
