willful delay
in our office 5 walks didnt even go out today. if we forget 1 letter they suspend us for wilful delay. but when managers cant cover he walks because they dont have the staff, nothing happens. i thought the USO is law. lets see some prosecutions please. why is it fine for managers to not sort all the mail that comes in the office. im not just talking about the office managers, but they higher upo ones which are only interested in sacking full timers and saving money, its just beyond a joke now.

Re: willful delay
i guess the difference is youre employed to take out all the mail for your delivery. I think leaving behind a couple of letters is unavoidable, be it missorts from other walks or late redirections, to expect 100% is not achievable realistically.
As for managers, they probably are able to cover their arse by saying they have excess sick leave or something, which is usually the case when that many walks are uncovered. Im guessing they have to show they tried to make arrangements to get deliveries covered and then that covers them for doing their best to maintain the USO.

Check the D.O.D.R. and if that's showing nil.........!
Its fraud and managers get sacked for falsifying documentations.

Re: willful delay
I suppose you must be in a large office... 5 walks is a lot but then trying to get folks for emergency delivery cover/OT is very difficult on a saturday.
What do you expect the manager to do? The manager will still have to report such an occurrence and he/she will be told off for that. And when managers get told or sanctioned, they will pass it down to the staff. Hence, folks will start getting home visits after a couple of days absence, less reduced (rehabilitation) period, bullying, harassment or worse...
Not fair! But we should be careful what we wish for in our spite.

Re: willful delay
Had a very heavy Friday, lots of packets, signed for and was not sure we would get round on time, informed manager who said if we managed our time better we should be able to complete! Where Raikky coming from here is that despite bad heavy days there is still an expectation to complete, where as a managers bad day is swept under the carpet because they are unable to manage the situation. We are a large office and also have walks that do not always go out, especially on Saturdays. Fair enough difficult to cover if people have cried off at the last minute, but guarantee come Monday morning still no extra cover in place to deliver failed delivery......why, because too many of our managers simply cannot manage. Forward planning has them scratching their heads.

Re: willful delay
How do you know things are swept under the carpet? I have been told that some managers get shamed overtly in their telephone conference meetings. Do you think they should be automatically sacked? or what?
Some managers take out walks and some will have gone down the road of Absorption which will be to the detriment of the posties that turn up to work. Weekdays are easier to rally troops from the same office or nearby ones
We do not know how many managers they have and how much they tried to cover between themselves but we should try not to lump all of them into the same category.
The other possible consequence (if this became a pattern) is for managers to stop giving those extra saturdays off for people that have family commitments...
I have no doubt the manager/s will be have to account for leaving 5 walks behind - and if they cover it up; they will soon be found out (its fraud) and be out of the door. The new privatised RM will be happy to get rid of some managers - lower wage bills, pensions and benefits

Re: willful delay
Did not say all...... but too many. No problem with time off for family commitments/family friendly or any other request from anyone for days off, as i would presume the relevant cover/resource has been planned into the equation.

Re: willful delay
Sometimes, the managers take a risk for the postie/s; they may grant an extra saturday off in the hope that x or y will come in on their day off or there might not be a long-term or short-term absence to complicate issues. A manager with problem saturdays might choose to be overstaffed rather risk having walks uncovered; and that is what their boss will certainly tell them to do or else face disciplinary actions.
For any postie to pretend that we do not have a saturday issue in delivery is being dis-ingenious: every office as their fair share of unauthorised absence or lets say unplanned absence for various reasons...
adamanti, my reply was not just about your post... It will educational to see some of us posties get involved or observe the planning and then we can truly criticise and make judgements. I guess it is easier to snipe... As well as planning, monitoring, and dealing with welfare and disciplinary issues we also expect them to take out walks.

Re: willful delay
Managers always have, or at least should have, the option of getting in casuals. Either there is a USO or there isn't. It shouldn't be dependent on how much sick leave there is.

Re: willful delay
I certainly do not expect any manager to take a walk out as i would assume their usual management work would be disrupted! However it does appear that their managers do expect them to deliver if there is no cover. No snipe intended, simply observation at my DO. In years gone past casuals were brought in when needed, so is it purely a budget driven response to expect managers to cover delivery? Yes they do face a challenge but this is reflected in their pay, which is to manage. Different sides of the coin, is all.

Re: willful delay
So a postman comes back from leave and finds a full, untouched walk already in his frame at 6.30am. What should they do?
They seriously cannot expect them to complete? I guess they can work to their time and have to ignore the bullying and intimidation to complete.
Not really on is it. Two days work for the price of one? What happened to the eight hours already allocated for the work the previous day?

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
