Moya's view on a 10 year agreement

Q. I’ve been at Royal Mail for many years, as have many other staff. But what happens after the three years we’ve been offered? I’m worried about it, as are many others. Why can’t we have a 10-year agreement? Name and address supplied.

A. Moya: Three years – the offer we have made to the CWU* – is a significant commitment. Our business plan is three years. The Government’s comprehensive spending review is three years. It’s a long time in business.

There’s no recent precedent at Royal Mail for a 10-year workforce agreement. It’s believed that no agreement of such duration has been reached by any major UK company – for very good reasons.

Too many things change in 10 years, especially in a business like ours where there are lots of challenges.

The longest agreement between Royal Mail and CWU has been three years.

For example, just 10 years ago, our letter volumes were still increasing while the smartphone era was literally in its infancy.

The reality is that the best guarantee for all of us is a successful and profitable Royal Mail.

Many of you have been asking what will happen once the proposed agreement ends in 2016. If there are any changes proposed after that point, they would be discussed with the CWU in the same way we have always done.

Get in touch with Moya. You can contact Just Say It by emailing justsayit@royalmail.com or by writing to Just Say It, Freepost. (No stamp required). Moya’s team will reply to all enquiries.

* The proposed agreement and the pay offer within it apply to employees in CWU represented grades in Core Operations, Logistics, Engineers, Fleet Maintenance Services, RMSS and Royal Mail International. The agreement is under discussion between us and CWU and is subject to contract.

Parcelforce Worldwide pay discussions continue to run separately with the CWU. Separate negotiations will take place for other CWU grade employees within Royal Mail as per current arrangements.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I agree with you, we'll get 5 years at best and if it is a watertight 5 year deal (with no re-opener clauses) then I'll rejoin the CWU because they will have pulled off a great deal with that.

10 years is dreamland and the CWU know it but you have to start high and work from there. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how long a deal is if it can be revisited and changed for a multitude of reasons.

Moya is right 10 years is too long. No one knows what happens in 10 years. 5 years is enough.

Look at our job 10 years ago and look at it now.

She's right 10 years is impossible, in fact I'd be amazed if we got through 3 years.

It isn't about the length of the agreement on terms etc because as the offer pointed out no changes would be made without agreement of the CWU. So change is possible within the 3 years let alone 10.

What we do not want is a handcuffed deal with a no strike clause and a woolly worded freedom to change working practices without any specifics.

So Moya is saying, despite privatisation, nothing has changed and we should settle for another 3 year deal. If the union don't like the following deal they don't agree to it. It all sounds too simplistic but if we maintain a strong union can they realistically protect our terms and conditions as before. How far does privatisation undermine this?
What have I done to deserve this?

I would love a 5 year deal but will it be the worth the paper its written on. How many times have they wiggled out of a agreement before.

Agreed, every deal that has been agreed in the past has been changed by management to suit their own agendas.
I would settle for 5 years protected, but would be amazed if rm didn't change the deal with in a year.

To look at it another way...

Imagine the luxury that a 3 year countdown to redundancy gives you. Anyone that is genuinely worried about the company's future has a 1000 days to train / plan for an alternative. Thats a lot more than for example the grangemouth workers have just got.

Perspective people.
