You can sell as few or as many as you like, but read this article first -

Re: shares info please
I'm sure, like people in Royal Mail, that each individual share should be given the dignity and respect to be traded as individuals and not as a collective :) unlike the understanding of many folk on here they both should be treated as individuals and you should not insist on them all been treated the same.

But then everyone has different opinions, thresholds and standards each to their own conscience.

Re: shares info please
Quite the stupid statement, the shares were sold whether RM employees bought any or not. It made no difference to anyone's contract or job, and doesn't mean said employees agree with privatisation because I'm pretty sure almost everyone that bought shares didn't.gluteus maximus wrote:All i will say is do not complain when you eventually receive your redundancy or new Contract of Employment
I'm guessing you didn't turn down your 725 shares. Why not? What's the difference between taking free ones and buying some, effectively making a free profit?

I think your right.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:But then everyone has different opinions, thresholds and standards each to their own conscience.
To me it would have been all about the money.
If I could have got my hands on a loan of £10m and somehow convinced them to sell me £10m worth of shares I would have sold my conscience in a heartbeat for a 50% quick profit and disappeared off into the sunset sharpish so to say I would never have bought RM shares as a point of principle is a lie because we all have our price.
On the other hand would I have scrabbled about in the dirt to maybe make a couple of hundred or even a couple of grand?...not really.
As for the free shares my intention is to keep those until my retirement, cash them in and hopefully have enough to buy a pint to celebrate.
I'm not really fussed either way.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Re: shares info please
Gluteus - The act of employees buying additional shares in Royal Mail will have no impact on our terms and conditions of employment either now or in the future. You clearly have no understanding of how the shares in Royal Mail have been distributed so as to 'rig' ownership in favour of the larger institutional investor.
The destiny of RM has been decided by the current Government for politically motivated reasons and had employees not had a 'punt' then those shares would have been quickly gobbled up by the general public, hedge funds or other institutional investors. The fact that Royal Mail shares, both to the public and institutional investors, were many times over-subscribed proves my point.
Why is it that people like yourself appear to object to employees buying shares in the company they work for and know something about but presumably have no objection to them investing elsewhere for profit?

Re: shares info please
You can sell any amount of the shares you have, however the process is seemingly deliberately awkward if you wish to avoid paying hefty broker charges.
Regarding the "moral" issue that some members raise about staff objecting to the privatisation but purchasing shares, I have 2 thoughts on this
1. I would rather any shares were held by OPG's rather than some Financial Institution, or Tory Carpetbagger
2. If the value were to rise, as it has seemed to have done, then why not benefit from this windfall, some of the monies made could be used to help support you in the event of strike action.
And, no I did not purchase any shares.

Re: shares info please
The reason I did not purchase any extra shares is simple, and perhaps other think its stupid .
Are our terms and conditions going to be affected by Privatization - of course they are. Not only do we have to compete with managerial bonuses, directorial bonuses, profit, modernization costs, operational costs and all the other things that have a call on a finite amount of cash, we now have to compete against investor returns and dividends.
Being a shareholder (for me) would mean that I personally would be adding to the pressure on our pay and T&Cs and that did not sit with MY conscience. Therefore by my logic the more shares I have the more pressure I apply personally. Yes the unsold shares would go to others outside RM, and the overall pressure would remain unchanged, but the more shares I have the more responsibility I have for the intrinsic costs of owning those shares.
I accepted the free shares, after much had wringing if I am honest, because the vast majority of employees were going to accept them so I was receiving the same as they were, (like pay rises for instance) despite it being against my political view.
I honestly believe there was a moral difference between me accepting free shares and getting an equal amount as everyone else, and buying any extra ones, but I am not condemning those who did. They have to answer to their own values and conscience - I have to answer to mine.
