How to sell the cwu

I want to have a drive in getting more guys into the cwu ,give me some positives for joining .

I've found it's usually easier to "sell" the whole Trade Union package rather than the CWU individually.

There are always people in an office who will argue that the CWU has got this wrong and that wrong and in some cases they're right but nobody can argue that being part of a trade union does not improve your terms and conditions and go some way to protecting you from unscrupulous employers.

I don't get the non-membership argument other than the cost which is negligible.
Even if union membership makes your job 1% more secure and your terms 1% better it's still good value for money.

When I first saw the topic I thought it was another floatation and who would be putting money down

Moya would buy with money from Tory government, then you'd all have to join unite.

For me its always been a insurance policy.

I tend to look at things more locally and my rep has always been there to offer some support when I ve needed it. If you make a mistake and you get called into the office to answer, then the rep is your best friend.

Nationally the Union have not always seemed to have made the best deals over the past few years. In fairness we are living in a tough climate and very few people are actually improving their lot. Most are just trying to hang on to a job.

I have found that often people come into the job and are quite happy to start with. They feel that they have no reason to join the CWU as the working conditions are better then they left behind. I have tried to point out that pretty much all of the benefits that they enjoy has been hard fought by the CWU over many years.

This normally is in one ear and out the other but as time goes by and they experience some of the less favourable sides of RM they quite often change their minds and join up.

Also, perhaps, that we're on £4 an hour more than TNT and it's the CWU that's not only got us that but gives us a chance of maintaining decent pay and conditions.

Apologies for the editing of your post - but the above sums up my reasons for joining the union.

I thought the DOM was a good guy, he then attempted to stitch me up. I stood up for myself and got it sorted to my satisfaction........... but then thought what would I have done if he'd chosen to play hardball ?. My options would have been to swallow it, or tell him where to stuff the job.

Alas our union rep really is the DOM's poodle, if and when the brown stuff hits the whirly thing I'll have to attempt to bypass the poodle entirely.
