This may sound a little naive but... What is the protocol for a strike?

I support this strike, voted yes and have learnt about and understand what we're striking for.

But I'm a newbie at this and have a few questions!

Do you strike your contracted hours? I'm due to start at 6.42 on 4th November and am slightly panicked about being a Billy no mates holding up the picket line on my own!

Do I wear my uniform? Doesn't that look like you intended to work but chickened out?!

It will be a 24 hour strike, and your local rep will make arrangements for picket duties as there are laws regarding the way these are manned. You do not have to stand on a picket line, you can stay at home if you wish. Some will wear uniform, some wont on the picket line. You should be notified what time the picket starts and what time it finishes.

At our place most just take the day off. We have a hard core that do picket, and we take turns in wearing our uniforms as it helps identify the official pickets, and also help advertise to the passing public that Postal WOrkers are taking action.

The fire brigade make their members stand on the picket line for their full duty in full uniform.

Your rep will probably come round and ask if you want to do picket line duty and allocate you a 2 hour slot.
You turn up, wave at passing cars that toot their horn and then go home.
People like to bag the early slots so it doesn't interfere with their day off.

In 2007 because I was the earliest start(0430) and I was the only one who started before 0500 for the first 30 minutes of picket duty I was effectively holding the line against myself in case I decided to scab.
Sometimes I would get bored take a few steps over the line and then tell myself to f**k off.
An Industrial Estate is a cold and lonely place at 0430.

I actually fully expected to spend the full day on the picket line and assumed everyone would be there together!! I have a very romantic view of striking mostly fuelled by studying Arthur Scargill!

Our way of striking is more friendly and less militant, and the public like it that way - as do I - militant lefty besides.
