temp contract and strike
hi guys, i'm currently on a temp contract that runs out at the end of october, this coupled with our mail centre being closed over the next few months has made my future more uncertain than it already was.
my options are
a) i strike with everybody else and they decide to lose me when my contract is up
b) i go in over the strikes and hope they keep me going
its not good that they dont let me know if i'm getting a new contract but do you think i'd be seen as a scab for trying to keep my job?

Leeroy you have a decision to make which is the envy of none. You have to weigh up in your own mind whether the long term aims of the reason for a strike call not only for yourself but also your colleagues has greater importance to you than the short term problems you may or may not have to cope with if you go on strike. Good luck mate, as I say a very big call for you.

Who cares if you're seen as a scab? Rather be seen as a scab and earn £300+ a week, than not be seen a scab but earn £50 a week on the dole.leeroy5312 wrote:hi guys, i'm currently on a temp contract that runs out at the end of october, this coupled with our mail centre being closed over the next few months has made my future more uncertain than it already was.

Re: temp contract and strike
Temp contract will always be the first to go. that is why they are temp contract. And this will happen (and it is hapening) regardless of who the owner of the company is.
People have been on these sort of temp contracts for about 3 years now - it is the way forward in a lot of companies. Striking will not protect you, mate. The Union has not even mentioned your plight now and do not seem to care...
Being a 'Strike breaker' is better than being a scrounger on the Dole!
People and the CWU should actually encourage you not to STRIKE - if they have a heart!

Re: temp contract and strike
From my understanding, the union can't sack you within 12 weeks of going on strike. For P/T folk it's irrelevant because they just won't renew your contract if you start playing up.
If think the p/timers who joined a few years back when you didn't need a driving licence will be in a vulnerable position. I joined 9 months ago and do 2/3 afternoon collections per week which put's me in a stronger position. I work in a smaller office and we would be in the s**t if it wasn't for P/timers as we're permanently short staffed.
Some of the F/T staff in our office who've been there 20 odd years don't even acknowledge us and they certainly wouldn't care if we lost our jobs by striking.

Though if you take your head out of your arse for one minute you might see it differently.chrisj wrote:

The questions are these:
In the greater scheme of things do I want to support the workers (class) or the bosses (class)?
When you are old and looking back on your life, do you want to remember the time you stood up for your principles or the time you sold them out?
And strikebreaking won't do you any good. Because the bosses will disrespect you as much as ultimately you will disrespect yourself.
So stand proudly with your colleagues on the picket line (if it comes to that).
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: temp contract and strike
Anyone that cannot see that this is a special case must belong to the 'I'm alright, jack brigade - and we do have some many of them amongst the established staff at RM.
This temp on probably a 3 months contract is barely better than an Agency (Angard*) worker:
So what is he going to be striking for? A job loss/the sack** and striking for others that already have a job and are protected from the sack if they went on strike?
Do me a favour, this is not about me and it is not about us (workers) and them (bosses). What is that about anyway?
* At least some of the Angard staff have secured some work and money for xmas - that boat is gone...
** Just be careful when you go to the job centre for your Universal Credit - do not tell me, you did yourself out of a job by foolishly going on strike.
If the CWU had said, we want RM to make all those on temporary contract permanent as a one-off; that I can understand (even I will strike for that). A moratorium for temp staff like those suggested by Lib Dem - as regards immigrants that have been in the country for a long time...
This temp on probably a 3 months contract is barely better than an Agency (Angard*) worker:
- Does he have a pension? Definitely Not!
What are his current terms and conditions beyond the 3 months assigment. You cannot protect what you have not got
What about pay rise - will he even still be RM to enjoy a pay rise? An even if he is on a 6 months contract - any loss of earnings and bonus will wipe out his pay rise.
Has he been awarded any shares?
Is this worker ever going to be a FT staff - almost certainly not
Even if you took part in a Strike, you will see be on a different contract to the people on perm contract

Re: temp contract and strike
it's a tricky one. How about having an accident at work a few days/week before any strike ?*

I struck on a temp contract last time. They did not get rid of me. I was made permanent. They can't give you detrimental treatment because you take Industrial Action.
You must understand that I am here purely as A BEARER OF MESSAGES.
