For what it's worth, I think that the long-term unemployed should be available for essential work - that is working for local councils, charity shops, aiding in the community - but only to the point where the number of hours they work would be equivalent to their being paid the national minimum wage. They should definitely not be given over to do non-essential work for multinational companies, and they should not be working full-time hours. And they should have full employment rights including the right to holidays on the basis of accruing a day for every 10/11 days worked (that about meets the national minimum?). Unfortunately, they are basically being treated as slaves to boost the profits of already massive companies. And as you have seen with the erosion of employment rights under this coalition government, the complete sense of 'meh' towards zero-hour contracts, all that they really want is to help big business at the expense of the average working class individual.
