I was diagnosed with MS around 5 years ago now and I've only had one day off in that period. MS mainly affects my balance and legs, muscles are so stiff but I find walking helps keep them a little bit looser.
Recently we've had a revision in our office which is not working out (surprise, surprise) and I am climbing stairs and inclines for over 4 1/2 hours a day which is too much for me but managers are refusing to put
me on a flatter walk until they get things sorted but I want a move now but they are saying NO!!! I've now had to go off sick this week as my legs are totally stiff and burning up inside.
I'm covered by the Equality Act and have been referred to ATOS before but the managers take no notice. What do I have to do to make them listen to me??

Re: What do I have to do to get them to listen?
DDA is now under the equality act, Union rep is off sick and not much use and as for ATOS- managers take no notice of my previous interview with them but I'll get in touch with them again!
I'm now getting asked each day to go out with an extra part of a delivery even though I' m finishing at my time, it just feels as though I'm being harassed !!!

Firstly you need to contact Area Rep and also see if your Branch has an Equality officer, 5yrs ago you were diagnosed but have only recently gone thru methods revision Q why was this not highlighted during the revision process?ILPOSTINO wrote:I was diagnosed with MS around 5 years ago now and I've only had one day off in that period. DDA's & Family friendlies should be highlighted very early on in the process....

Re: What do I have to do to get them to listen?
I have a member with MS, found this for him, got him referred to ATOS who backed this as they had no choice, under the act you should have adjustments made i.e. flatter delivery area.
You are not looking less work just work suited better to your needs. You need to bring this up with management asap & tell them if not done you will seek advice from the equality commission!!
by the way it's still the DDA act in N.I.
Your rights at work
Everyone with MS is covered under the Equality Act and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
This means that it's against the law for an employer, or potential employer, to treat you less favourably or discriminate against you because of your MS.
In England and Wales, if you feel you've been discriminated against, you can contact the Disability Law Service (DLS) for free advice on your rights.
If you live in England, Scotland or Wales the Equality Advisory & Support Service (EASS) provides information, advice and support on all types of discrimination.
Reasonable adjustments
Under the Equality Act, if you ask your employer to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ so you can keep doing your job, they are required to do so.
What these adjustments are depends on your own situation, and what is considered ‘reasonable’ by both you and your employer.
Reasonable adjustments could include:
Flexible or altered working hours, to help you with attending hospital appointments, or increased travelling time
More regular breaks
Moving your desk to a more accessible area of the office
A car parking space by your nearest entrance to work
A workstation assessment – simple things like adjusting screen brightness on computers can help
The option to work from home

Re: What do I have to do to get them to listen?
Good point Glenno although I did go on about it to my DOM who was helping the planning team but no duty was set aside for my needs that I know of.
Guess what the DOM has now left the business in the last month and left everyone in the s**t as things are not working out !!
Looks like i'll have to get in touch with the area rep, didn't want to go that far but if that's what I've got to do ..........

no dount the dom got his bonus??
they tried a nearly similar one on me.
got a dom from another office (who was leaving) to do the investingating and tried to get me out when i clearly had a knee problem.
unfortunatley the plan backfired and i smashed them in the tribunal....
the dim had been moved.
i highlighted to moya what went on and probably why but they werent interested.
they love managers like that.
royal mail are not a acring company....you have to fight tooth and nail for your rights...even amongst potential corruption.
