manager coming to my house?

hi there

I rang in sick last thursday to say i wasnt coming in and have been ringing in every morning like told to, they are never happy about sick absences but if you are ill then you are ill. He still rings me in afternoons too to see if i am coming and friday he rang so i didnt answer as felt i had already told them i wasnt coming in and probably wouldnt saturday either. Anyway I spoke to him this morning and now he says if i am not back at work tomorrow he will come to my house personally to see how i am and what can be done to get me back to work! I told him it wouldnt be possible for him to do that because i live with my parents and they do not like ppl just coming round.
I was not happy with this myself since I am not all that close to work, be about a 12 mile round trip for him as it is for me.
Anyway to cut a long story short, it has been less than a week since i rang in sick and wonder if anyone has had their manager come to their house or is he just bluffing. I do not like him at times as feel he can be intimidating and harrassing, i feel it could be a female thing as I am the youngest one there. (early 30s)

I would email your manager and copy in your rep and area rep.

In the email i would thank him for his concern but stress you are declining the offer of a home visit. Explain that you know for a fact their is nothing he can say to you face to face, that he can't say on the phone and that you feel that a home visit is an invasion of your personal life and somewhat inappropriate.

However if you insist on a home visit against my wishes you'll leave me with no alternative but to put in a grievance against you.

He may be asking, as he could deem it unfair on you to ask you to come in, because as you have said it's a 12 mile round trip.
I don't think it is an unreasonable request to ask for a female manager, this way you are making every effort to comply.

guess its not what you wanted to see however these things rarely are, from the sounds of your initial message this is not a long term illness and as the agreement states the managers are "only" trying to "help" get you back to work.

If he does come round of course you could never let a manager inside your house with your parents in. Best to sit on a chair at the door with a coat on and speak to them for as long as you can with them standing outside. Never let them in.

Yes it matters, that's why you should be in the union, it's like an insurance policy - tbh I don't know what you are concerned about, if you're sick you're sick his visit won't change a thing.

I had 2 managers turn up at my house , I asked them why they needed to turn up mob handed, the first one said that he was there on a official capacity, the second one said that he was there as a mate and friend who was concerned about my welfare, the second manager had only been in our office for 2 days, before that I had never seen him before.

A home visit should only be arranged firstly if you agree to it and if it's impossible for you to attend your office and it's impossible to discuss any help they could offer over the phone.
It should be a last resort.
To be honest an uninvited manager wouldn't get beyond my gate,I have a dog and I'm not afraid to use it.
