The average wage in the country. Which is about £23,000.00 p.a. I think. That would be an extra £4000.00 a year pre-tax.
Cost of living is spiralling now, with food predicted to rise 20% in next 5 years. Not to mention the pre-requisite energy rises, petrol....

Certainly not minimum wage, which I believe is about £14,500.00 p.a., give or take. And I believe would be the eventual target for RM to get us on in the future. Especially new employees.

Also consider what is required to earn that average wage of £23,000 per annum - is that for a flat 40 hour week? I doubt it very much !!!
You can pluck any figure out of the air for a so called average or living wage but what you have to do to earn it is what also has a very strong bearing on your quality of life.

If you look at the median* hourly earnings (excluding overtime) in April 2012, full-time workers averaged £12.76 per hour and part-time workers averaged £8.01 per hour. The overall median figure was £11.21 per hour - http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/ashe/annu ... -overtime-

*the median is the amount which 50% of people earn less than and 50% of people earn more than. It can often be a better reflection than the mean (often called the average)

For example, 5 workers earn the following per hour: Pat - £10, Jim - £11, Alice - £8, Sara - £8, Moya - £725

The mean (average) hourly rate is £152 (add them all up and divide by 5) whereas the median is £10 (because 2 people earn less and 2 people earn more)

A fair day’s work to the boss is the maximum amount of work an average worker can do without exhausting him /herself so much that they can’t do that same amount of work the next day. You, the worker, gives as much, and the capitalist gives as little, as the nature of the bargain will allow.

So if I divide £1450 by 120 it would be roughly £12 a minute, then divide that by 60 and that would be about 20p then multiply that by 7 that's £1.40 - :hmmmm I could probably swing for that once a week :chuckle :chuckle mind there would be expenses to consider :whistle

It's all down to disposable income. I'd work for £100 a week if you could arrange for my Rent, Gas, Electric, Water, Phone, Car Tax, Council tax, Income Tax etc to only cost me £75 a week....I'd be a happy man. :Very Happy As it is we're all just wage Slaves and things aren't getting any cheaper.

Which is why I find it so hard to grasp why my fellow Posties are so eager to sign away their T & Cs for the next 20 years for a paltry £200-£300. FFS guys lets have a bit of long term vision! :hmmmm

True.
Most council employees earn more than us for shorter weeks.

I find a lot of Posties are just too apathetic to worry about privatisation Plymouth. The point I was trying to make is that many fall for the offer of a few hundred quid today...without looking at the long term effects on their job. Many may be working for a further 15-20 years in a crap job simply because they'd signed off on a crappy office revision (that they knew wasn't going to work) just to get £200-£300! :arrrghhh

Whenever people start getting irate about a pay deal and worrying about an extra £5 a week I try not to get stressed about it. Look at the BIG picture and worry about how it's going to effect you over the long term. We need to retain good T & Cs and protect our Pensions. I am shitting myself over how ,after privatisation we are going to be able to protect our pensions. I'm going to be too old to get stiffed at 65 because some smart talking Management executive has pulled one over on the CWU and raided our pensions! Lets face it the CWU hasn't got the best track record when it comes to brokering good deals. D2Ds anyone? On a good week I used to be able to make £80 on D2Ds now.......? :arrrghhh

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
