The Public joining the protest?

if we could get the public to join us when we strike it would mean we know they are behind us 100%

therefor I suggest that on our delivery walks and if anyone asks us about the pending strikes etc, we ask them to join us by taping shut their letter boxes so no one can post anything on the days of our strikes.

there are bound to be manager's and non union posties still working, but if they can't deliver the mail they will have to endorse it and leave it to the normal Union member postie to deliver next day and maybe meaning that they have to cut off.

just a thought, perhaps the CWU could even put an Advert in the national papers asking the public who don't want RM sold off to tape shut their boxes on strike days.

I get where your coming from but it would never work. At best a few oldies would go along with it.

Better to get the public to put pressure on their local MP.

Doorstepped, you hit on quite an amusing point. You wont need to cut off because they will not let strikers do overtime to catch up. Anyway that is what happened to me last time we were out in 2009. So there is absolutely no chance of me doing any extra. I was told by lino at the time that he was not prepared to give me overtime to catch up (I was the only striker in the offfice), and my cut off was given to a non striker. It,s just amazing that they can expect you to do overtime when it suits them, but the nasty b-stards do not want you earning extra following a strike.

they will care if they are told the truth on delivery. as I told someone today royal mail look on a lost job as natural wastage but I think of it as a job for my grandchildren.
when and not if we are privatised the foreign company that runs us will only worry about profit and not:-

delivery points down long lanes
pensions
pay and conditions
job security
d2d payments
sick pay
The list is endless but the bottom line is they will not give a toss about the workforce

I have a good rapport with my customers but to be honest the vast majority couldn't give a toss about the sell off of R.M.
Its been on the cards for years in one form or another and now its finally under their noses they still haven't a clue.
I regularly go down the paths alongside one courier or another from TNT: UPS: Yodel: to Hermes, folks don't bat an eyelid.
Nowadays and in the real world they already accept this as the norm.

I regularly spend time in West London where TNT are trialling their letter delivery to half a million homes. Their posties wander the streets in their orange kit with matching sturdy Dutch bikes alongside our Posties and no one bats an eyelid.

I find people generally are no longer sympathetic to Trade Unionism and its protections: they find it outdated and to a point can be jealous.
Sadly I really do think it will be difficult to get the majority of the public on our side, most of the people I speak to don't even have a clue what the universal service is or care.
On the Rurals the last drops now accept a delivery at 15.00+ to be the norm and some often say that 'You only carry junk mail it wouldn't matter if you only came twice a week.'

I don't think the public give a toss about RM being privatised as long as they get their mail. How often they get their mail is another matter. It seems to me that so much of it is D2D and direct mail from the likes of Sky, BT, B Gas...etc that it is considered junk and therefore not worth having. If there were only 2 deliveries a week I don't think most customers would give a toss.

(By the way we refer to those we deliver to as "customers", when in fact the customer is one who has paid for the service. Do we have any contract with the recipient?)

Is this serious!? the public know royal mail employees have had it easy for so long now, they feel no sympothy to us and rightly so. nurses and such, yes, but postman is now being made into a 'normal' job.

Ok so I've been a postman for 7 months (still haven't got any uniform just a high vis vest!) On most my rounds there isn't toilet facilities, so I've gone for a slash where I can, such as in woodlands or down trailways that I pass etc. Would I get fired if somebody spotted me and reported me? I can't physically hold in a pee for 6 or so hours!

Yea that's fair enough, I've worked for the company for 11 months now and easily the best and easiest job I've had.

Members of the public may or may not have any sympathy for posties but most are aware of what happens to public services after they are privatised. They know it will mean higher prices and worse services. Polls show around two-thirds of people are opposed to privatisation of Royal Mail. Most of the comments sections on Yahoo news site and newspapers are mainly filled with posts opposing privatisation.
Whether they can actually do anything about it is another matter. Perhaps some of them might sign an online petition or write to their MPs. But I think most people realise that nothing they can do is going to prevent the Government pushing this through. They will just moan later on like they do about the railways and gas prices. Too late then.
