What will happen here?

On my walk there is a block of flats with a trade lock on that needs to be pressed while pushing the door. Obviously with your hands full at the start of a bundle and no where to put the mail while you do this the only way is to press the button and lean into the door with your shoulder but when I did this today I somehow put one of the glass panes through. I don't think I used any excessive force and there's CCTV stickers on the windows so if they say I was aggressive and that caused it I'd like to see the footage.

Obviously I told one of the residents in the flat what had happened then reported it back to my manager who said we just need to wait for the complaint coming through and there will probably be an interview to find out exactly what happened. What am I looking at when the complaint comes through? Can they say it was criminal damage and sack me for it or am I likely to get away with a warning?

Thanks. I did ask another manager what was likely to happen when I got back as the one I called had already left but he just said "that depends on what they say" and he wouldn't answer when I asked if there was any possibility it could cost me my job if they did try to say it was intentional which bothered me a bit.

As it was a genuine accident you shouldn't hear anymore about it. As its Royal Mail its a sad state of affairs that we can't say the same in every office. Its not a sacking offence so I wouldn't be too concerned.

The fact you are worrying and that the managers are not putting your mind at rest is indicative of the culture prevalent in RM.

Well with camera's & a guy coming out of 1 of the flats when he heard it smash I don't think ignoring it was an option. That would only have made it much worse.

They may claim through H&S that you should have put your bundle back in your bag. Then held the button while pushing the door at the handle with your other hand and then took the bundle back out your bag. So be prepared to answer that if your DOM is gonna make an issue out of it.

It was an accident so don't lose any sleep over it.

I completely lost the plot once and kicked a panel clean out of someone's front door after their dog nearly had my fingers off in the letter box... I'm still in the job and they got a new front door with the proviso that they had a cage fitted to it.

Don't worry about it. Many years ago I was delivering to the flats above the shops and my pouch got caught on the drain pipe as I turned. Didn't realise of course and I pulled the whole lot down, gutter and all!
Nothing was done about it but come to think of it....I didn't stop to see...lol

If I owned (lived in the block) I would be more worried about a claim for damages cause by injury, Surely it should be safety laminated glass and should only crack.
