Advice

Post by myrmcusername »

Hello, not posted before and just wanted to ask for some advice.

Started with Royal Mail back in January meant to be Monday to Friday 10.00am till 15.00pm Post person with driving duties, six month contract in that office with only occasional days being sent out.

Basically since then it's been nothing like that and pretty much things going wrong from day one.

1.No induction, told I was to start in a different office then what I applied for. Which I did, did two days work before HR phoned saying there's been a mistake and I need to do an induction, and after that the start date would be at original office.

2.Monday to Friday suddenly being changed to Monday to Saturday.

3.Numerous times being told 'you'll be in this office today' only to turn up and be told I should be somewhere else.

4.No three month or six month review, or Id card and no change over to date.

Now although all the above was annoying, I just got on with it. I could do the Job fine no problem. The problem is a couple of months ago, I got told by the manager of the original office I worked for I was being moved, but it should be better for me as it was closer to home and I'd only be a floater for that office.
So I was happy, and I agreed and started at the other office. Since then I've been moved between the two different offices three time's and a total of four if you include the first office. Each time of course being told 'Sorry about this, but you'll definitely being staying here now and wont be sent out' only to be moved to the other office and still being sent out as a sector.

I told my manager multiple times that it was pointless changing me in the first place as I was happy to stay at the original office and be sent out from there. Only to be told 'not to worry, I definitely wont be moved again'.

Anyway I got on with it, and at the end of August my contract was coming to an end, I asked if the manager could check if it was being extended. He checked and said it had been extended till September, I also got told this by another manager.

Start of September I was also told again I wont be moved anymore and I'm no longer a sector reserve an will only cover for that office, but he was in the process of getting my current contract sorted as it ended on the 9th and no one had told him if I was being kept on, but come in Monday as normal.

Now this is why I'm p*****d. I got up Monday morning to receive a txt saying I'll be sent to an office 12 miles away all week and any problems to phone.
Well I'd had enough being p*****d about so refused. Phoned up and said it's in Royal Mails hands, warn me, sack me whatever, my contracts finished anyway. I've worked hard done everything you've asked so far, no complaining and your f*****g me about.

So he phoned me back saying he'd spoke to his boss and basically I'm a sector reserve ( he only said last week I wasn't ? ) an I go where I'm told.
Also it's not in Royal Mails hands to decide to finish me as I got made permanent in June( Again, what ? he told me himself it was only extended till September, plus I'd had no review or signed anything)

Anyway I sent an email saying my contracts ended and I expect any holidays/pay due at the end of the week. But the thing is, now I'm out of a Job I was perfectly happy in, an through no fault of mine, but them p*****g me about.
Even though it's probably to late to get my job back, should I complain? is there anyone I can complain to? union rep or cwu, HR?
Or should I just let it go and move on?

Sorry for the long post, just f*****g annoyed.

Sorry bout that, I got told last week my contract was going to finish on the 9th, which was Monday. But even though it was meant to finish I got told to come in Monday as normal, I was getting ready for work on the Monday as normal when I had a txt saying I was being sent out all week to an office twelve miles away.

That's when I refused to go, as he'd previously told me I was definitely just going to be cover for the one office. I then proceeded to say it's in Royal Mails hands either to tell me I'm not needed or sort it out and stick by what they had previously promised. Also if they couldn't promise I wouldn't be sent out then maybe it would be better to just finish the contract now as it was supposed to be at its end.

That's when he replied 'no you were made permanent reserve in June just no one had been told'. I then said if that's the case I'd have to give you a week notice, but he said no just send us an email saying you resign. I think they were just trying anything to get me to come in.

In the end I sent an email not saying I resign but that as my contract had come to it's end and I had not had a review telling me I was to be kept on or signed anything to that effect then I expect any pay owed to be in at the end of the week.

No ones been in touch since.

So they basically gave you a permanent contract without informing you.. typical RM incompetence

You was under the impression that your contract was due to end and in frustration told them you wouldn't be going to the other office due to being pissed about.

RM mail could say you refused a reasonable request by not going to the other office and hold that against you because that's the w*****s they are.

You could try explaining to your DOM there was a misunderstanding about your contract and that you was unaware that you had been given a permanent contract, likewise if you was in the union contact them.

If you don't get your job back and your owed money your entitled to get it back.

Firstly you shouldn't have refused.
You should have agreed to be sent but you would have to finish at xxx time your own office.

As for your contract not being renewed, they don't need to send you a contract right away, it could be 2 weeks later or verbally done with your office manager(they would still send contract(I think). So if you agreed then officially you've broken the contract.
And you probably won't get any job seeking money either.

I think you should grovel to the manager. Make some excuse, under pressure etc.

Spot on, but the thing is they only told me about being made permanent in the second conversation I had with them, which funnily enough was just after I refused to go in and after I told them let this be a natural end to the original contract. So makes me think they were saying it just to get me in and talk me round to going or to f**k up my last weeks pay and holiday by deducting money for not given notice.

Only in Royal Mail could you be made permanent without actually signing anything official.

I phoned HR this morning to see if they had me down on the system as leaving and they did, also asked should I take my uniform back in, in case they charge me for it, he advised I do just in case. So I think I will tomorrow an have a word with the manager about everything.

No, never agreed to anything. Although see were your coming from with finishing at a certain. Just they pissed me about to much so reacted. I'd never grovel to any manager in Royal Mail though they've been incompetent from the start.

Dealing with incompetent managers is in the job description (didn't you read the handbook) :Very Happy . Ok don't grovel but you don't want to be unemployed in this climate.

go in tomorrow personally to see the DOM, and say you have been under pressure lately and being moved from piller to post has really got to you mentally.

also, wherever your "home" office is is where you start your day everyday, regardless of where you are working.

so you leave your "home" office at 10am and you make sure you are back there for 3pm for instance and claim expenses ie: bus fares, petrol etc

most managers will not tell you the above as it works for them not to, but it is the official line.

good luck with getting your job back and let us know how you get on :)

Yes its definitely a bizarre organisation to work for. Sounds to me that they were desperate to cover a duty and were trying to entice you in.

This is why these temp contracts are a useful tool for RM... it gives them a license to do what they like at their own leisure :thumbdown

Just been in this morning to take my uniform back and see what the manager had to say and tell him how I feel. Basically told them they were incompetent and have been from day one, which he actually agreed with and said it could of been handled better.

I also explained about the contract an how it couldn't of been made permanent in June as both himself and another manager had confirmed with me it was till September. Again he said he was as confused as me, as he checked it Saturday and it said Monday the 9th and could only have been changed that morning by HR or someone above him.

He also admitted, that he and any other manager for that matter, should of said I wouldn't be sent out anymore as that's the whole point of the sector reserve's contracts. Of course none of this actually helps me in anyway.

I also just reiterated the fact it's been one whole f**k up since day one, induction wise/no reviews/no I.d/no change over etc....How it was a waste of an employee that's just been trained up for those months and now I'm basically f****d three months before Christmas with having no job. I've worked hard and Royal Mail basically let me down and couldn't give a s**t.

I said I'd be speaking to the union if my pay is f****d up as well, as I was willing to work a weeks notice if needed but got told I never needed to.

Basically that's it, end of. Cant say I'll be recommending working for Royal Mail anytime soon. Not because of the other posties of course but management and the f***ers above them.
