Argument of Low letter box

Hi I was delivering to this house, which has a very small letter box about 6" wide but at the bottom of this wooden door
The house sits on a lot of land and about 40ft from unadopted road but has no gate so is open to the road, and is well looked after so loads of money.

The lady owner came out and said could I make sure the letters are pushed through as Kids can see them from the road , I replied I am not sure I can as I have a bad back ( though I put the letters in the letterbox but not always all the way through as the letterbox is stiff, for me to push them all the way through I would probably have to kneel on the front porch). The lady says to me in that case you should not be doing the job , my reply was if my back goes bending down pushing your letters through are you going to pay my mortgage if I have no job, i also said, the letterbox should be higher , so she replied you should not be doing the job and I am going to complain , I said I have passed all the tests and been doing the job 24yrs I just walked off, got back to the office and they had rang up made some story up I was rude , maybe I was, but she was first by saying I should not be in the job.

I told my lino about how low the box was so he is going round tomorrow to see it , Just put a box on the side of the porch

If you are unable to push the letters all the way and you genuinely felt you had a case you would have been better off

A) Ring the bell/knock on the door. No answer then P739 (or)
B) Returning the mail, endorsing it as No Access, then tell your line manager.

I feel for you but thats my honest answer. May be wrong but thats how I see it.

Arguing with customers is a no-no...... you are actually in the wrong here. All mail should be pushed completely through...if this is not possible endorse and take back to the office. Most rounds I have done have quite a few low letter boxes and at each one you should follow the advised SSoW. Take bag off shoulder before crounching down to post items. We all do that don't we! But seriously leaving mail hanging out the box where ever it is is asking for trouble.

Why not use the dog peg? It would increase your reach and enable the mail to be pushed through. Also why engage the customer in that way - just say OK and walk on.

Mind you could just not engage the customer who DID actually have a valid point - low letter boxes are a hazard of the job, the answer would be to report it to the H & S rep and have it risk assessed BEFORE you get into a slanging match.

You may not believe this but as a sovereign nation we too can make laws - it is possible to make legislation to have delivery points above waist height or for RM to contact low letter box customers requesting an alterative delivery point within a certain time frame - see we aren't toothless just balless.

Low letter boxes are not just a pain but ones with cast iron or sharp flaps or resisting spring is just not on. There are also some that has absolutely no clearance to the floor and you need shard fingernails or something flat to lift the lid...

I suppose there is only one 'possible' situation where one cannot really push the letter all the way through: A low letter box and anything that is more than A5 goes so far and snags on the carpet, and further clamped on by a tight flap. You will not only need to get on your knees to make sure it goes through but there is also a chance the letter/s will tear whilst trying... Bother

Who designs doors with low letter boxes though? In terms of usefulness you might as well have the fooking door handle 6 inches off the ground as well.
