Shin splints

Post by postiewhite »

Never had them before but for the last few days just above my ankle on the lower part of my shinbone hurts on my left leg when I walk which is restricting my pace. Im a newish postie(8wks) but the postie I was working with says it sounds like shinsplints. Ive come home, put some ice on my ankle and im just resting it. If it is Shinsplints then it says it needs to be rested otherwise it will get worse and could turn into a stress fracture. Is shinsplints a common postie thing (as well as athletes)? If so do we work through it or speak to a manager about treatment?

Managers are a bunch of useless failed Posties, they wouldn't have a clue what Shin Splints is, let alone what to do.

i got them when i 1st started, do you have decent footware? i didn't at the time, just wore some old knackered ones to start,
i popped some different trainers on and was ok after a couple of days, was a struggle to get round at the time.

Ive got the CAT trainers which were given to me. Do I put it in the accident book and make them aware of it to cover me?

you need to stretch your calves before you start your walk, I have suffered with shinsplints for longer than I can remember, use a kerb on the road, face away from the road with your foot from the ball at the front only on the kerb and slowly lower your foot down, you should feel a pulling on your calf, bounce slowly on it for a minute or two to warm up the muscles.

also take it easy for the first couple of minutes, once your leg(s) have warmed up you should be ok.

hope this helps you like it helps me :Very Happy

Good idea to stretch your calf muscles but don't bounce them........ http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/ ... tches.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Step Drop Stretch.

I do it whenever I'm standing at a door waiting for someone to answer for their packet.

I ve had something like this with my ankle off and on. I find a thick support bandage helps on the walk before the pain really starts. Once you have the pain other than rest I don't know a cure.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

suffer with them a bit myself - best advice i can give is to see your doctor and try and get referred to a podiatrist. this takes a while ( 4 months for me! ) as well as doing calf/achillies tendon stretches every morning/night i would also get some fitted insoles made for your trainers. a good sports or ski shop will do them for you- bit expensive at around 80 quid but they helped me keep working. how sympathetic is your manager - mine got me a phone appointment with ATOS who arranged and paid for some physiotherapy which also helped.
good luck.
