How will you vote ?

CWU say they are going to ballot us on strike action, so how are you going to vote this time round.

Last time if you remember, we voted to strike, and what happened? our glorious Union sold us down the river, and many of us got a pay cut when the D2D money was dished out in a different way, on top of that we had lost a days pay for every day on strike.

Now four years later where are we after the 2010 agreement, nothing has changed, we are still being bullied and harassed, we are still having to put up the with runners, the come in earlies, etc, who make those of us doing the job properly look slow, did we actually save any jobs ? did the union stop any mail centres closing, did they 'eck as like.

This time I'm saying a big fat NO to strike action, simply because it means, nothing will change, RM will still ride rough shod over us, while Billy and Dave go to "talks" drink and eat at our expense.
If we do go out, it will be a Thursday, the heaviest day, which means on the Friday, you'll have twice as much to deliver.

The answer to this is simple, work to rule, work the way Royal Mail want us to :

Come in for your start time
Finish on your finish time
Take your meal breaks
Use the trolleys they provide, no mail on the shoulder, like we have been told.
Lock up your HCT, if it's going to be left for more than five minutes, walk it everywhere.
Use a "Post it peg" everywhere you suspect a dog, even if it does take 5 mins to post one pay slip
Do your daily vehicle checks
In fact do everything that Royal Mail say you should do in your duty time.
Work to your pace, not your mates if you are P&L
Make them see the revisions don't work, we are making revisions work.
Sit back and watch the backlog build up, that will have them shitting bricks faster than any strike.

Every day a mail centre worker goes out on a legal action means the company has to hire a temp worker to fill their place. Plus they have to go to the expense of opening up more "out houses." With the business running at such a slender profit margin, it can only afford X number of days.

Anyway, in addition to a strike, why not a boycott of Amazon by postal workers for the duration? It's a huge company and 50,000 customers gone won't make much of a difference but PR-wise, it would be a disaster for Royal Mail.

surely that's the way everyone should be working anyway, its not a work to rule ? where's the backlog then ?

Added a poll - although it would be nice if people explain the reasons for their vote.

Mine is - strike - A few reasons.

1. To lay down a marker for any new owners - Beware here be dinosaurs
2. As a notice to Royal Mail - No to a "No strike " in any form.
3. As a notice to Royal Mail and the CWU - We need clarity on agreements (also a no to this stability agreement which they have not fleshed out).
4. No - to Privatisation.
5. As a marker to the Pension people - No to changes which make people worse off in retirement and No to changes when you said the pension was safe.

In my honest opinion this 2013 strike vote is more important than the 2010 one. That one was over 2 agreements and although it was not handled well by the Union, I don't think it should colour our approach with this one. A wrong move by the membership and it will bite us on the arse more times than the D2D fiasco and the BT2010 has ever done. This aint a 3 year problem we are fighting its for decades and generations ahead.

i want a work to rule in my office before i even consider a strike or whats the point,the runners will come in the day after a strike an hour early ,wont take a break and clear it up for nothing. ive never worked a strike but the way i feel about the way the majority of my colleagues do the job,im not willing to lose money for them.

Work to rule won't work, the same runners that will be in a hour early after a strike, will carry on as normal, the union has been running a do your job properly campaign for a good few years, these runners are the reason that hasn't worked, and will be the same reason a work to rule won't work. These people would sell their own granny to finish half an hour early.

Problem is offices are planned to work the way Royal Mail want us,that is to say "on paper" doing all the things you say shouldn't create a backlog so when/if it does Royal Mail will want to know why and the most likely explanation from their point of view is performance.

So...In will come the managers standing at the end of your row with clipboards and you will be tested and some will fail and someone will be accused of deliberately going slow and someone will be suspended and you will have to make the decision of whether you support your colleague or not and given you've already bottled it over national industrial action I wouldn't like to be in their shoes.

i know the union have tried but i feel they could do a lot more to highlight the issue.Most of the fellas that do it in my office are senior men that should know better.I ask them if they worked on the tills at tesco,would they open up an hour early so i could get served,sad.

I'll vote YES simply because I don't like the way the current management are running the company. I don't think the new management will be any better....and I'm really concerned about any attacks on our current T & Cs and Pensions.

I know a lot of Posties feel it's pointless, and they don't like to lose a days pay, but FFS if you're not going to stand up for yourselves and for your future employment what are you going to stand up for?

Apart from anything else it lays down a marker for both present and future management. It's going to be democratic so if you're still not sure you'll know what the majority of members feel. And it's going to be official, therefore you cannot be bullied into working or crossing picket lines and you should have nothing to fear by supporting the strike.!

I'm quite happy to vote for a strike just for the hell of it.

But my concerns are my pension and privatisation, and as TBT says, even if RM still gets privatised, it might make any new owners think twice when the come up with any 'innovations'.
