Hi.
My intial 6 month contract is due to end and was told by the head manager that i would be made permanent.
Which i was suprised about really as ive only been there 6 months.
Well today i recieved the contract through the post but its a 3 month tempray contract.
Can you be made permanent after only being there 6 months?
Seems strange the manager promised me a permanment deal and then i get 3 months.
Maybe theres a mix up between the managers and Hr not sure.
Love to be made permanent

There is no hard and fast rule regarding a permanent contract.
I started 8 months ago on a permanent contract.

Re: Permanent contract? after 6 months
Permanent contracts can be granted at any time. There is no rules regarding this.
However, legally RM can issue 'temporary' contracts out to staff for two years, after which you are assumed to be a permanent staff member under the law. That is to say, it requires a serious case to dismiss you, they can't just say that they are not going to renew your contract.
It is possible that there has been a mistake between the manager and HR, it is also possible that the manager asked for a permanent contract for you and was told no. He/she may have been lying. He/she may not have the authority to do as he/she said they would. Ask and see what they say.

It is actually 4 years legally, however there is an agreement with CWU that FTCs will be made permanent after 2 years. The legal right to claim unfair dismissal and to statuary redundancy pay applies after 2 years.UnhappyGremlin wrote: However, legally RM can issue 'temporary' contracts out to staff for two years, after which you are assumed to be a permanent staff member under the law. http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 49#p493990" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;3.2 Royal Mail employees will be employed on permanent contracts, except where there is a genuine short term need identified. CWU will be consulted in advance where there is any such requirement. Temporary contracts will not exceed two years unless it has been jointly agreed that there are very exceptional circumstances. The position of temporary contract employees will be kept under regular review by the local parties, with a view to converting to permanent contracts where and when possible. Additionally, where change programmes have been completed and bedded in, the status of temporary contract employees will be reviewed and converted to permanent contracts unless there is no need for this additional resourcing or where there is an identified and agreed need to continue with a fixed term contract. Royal Mail confirms that as part of the review of this agreement, it is the aspiration to reduce the length of temporary contracts to no more than one year.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
