turning down overtime.

Im on a 5 day pt contract, 5 hrs a day covering annual leave. Ive only been a postie for 7 weeks and im glad of bits of overtime here and there,infact I start an hr early so ive working 30 hrs a week. For the last 2 weeks ive been asked to work my day off and ive said yes,more so to feel obliged to say yes rather than enjoy my day off. I feel as if I reject working my day off then they might not offer me anything in the future. I just dont want it to get into habit that they will expect me in every day off.
Is the dom usually ok with you rejecting working your day off?

to add to that do you think its ok to say to him I dont mind working 1 in 4 days off for example.!

Don't work an hour early if Royal Mail don't pay to do this. They doesn't count before duty time overtime. Only do it if they pay you to do it :)

I get paid an hour's overtime for going in early. I just have this feeling that im going to be asked if id like to do my day off each week. I dont want to do every week but maybe once a month but dont wanna feel like im not flexible enough by turning them down every week or wont they see it like that? On the days I do work (9.30-2.30).I dont have a problem starting early for example.

Think it really comes down to the manager in question, it is their decision.

I do work with a couple of posties that have refused OT in the past, despite working loads of hours previously, and they are no longer asked.

Managers will always ask those guys they know are looking for OT. It makes sense that once you've started turning it down they won't bother asking you first. Take a leaf out of their book and simply lie! "Sorry I've got to do something that day"! I always blame the Missus, "Sorry Boss I'd love to do it .....BUT the Missus wants to go shopping"!

If you fancy some more OT in a few weeks just ask, he can only say no.

actually sometimes it is better to say no. It isn't so that they can't rely on you, more really to show them that you are neither a mug or a machine. One thing you do need in this job is a strong personality.
