Depends on your area and local agreements. The flex part of the 2010 agreement was for no longer than 30 mins both ways.

We had something like this a while back when the mail centre closed down half way through the night due to a machine fire. There was very little mail came in and we were told that if we took the early day then the next day we would be expected to clear the backlog for nothing. Most took the early finish but I really don't like being held over a barrel so I opted to stay on and finish to my time even though there was no real work to be done so I helped in the front counter.

The next day we got mega hit and I simply worked to my time leaving a 1/3rd in the frame. Someone picked up 2 hours docket and was happy as well.

So in your situation if you offered to finish your time but was SENT home anyway then you owe them nothing. If you choose to leave early then I guess you owe them the time back. :hmmmm
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Just tell them you are happy to work to your time - let them find you the work

hey presto you don't owe any hours

and it amazed me that postie return to the office after finishing delivery. If the boss doesn't know what time you finish they can't increase your workload.

There is no agreement for banking of hours in Royal Mail. Any office who have agreed this locally must put up with what they have signed for. If they have not put their signature to it, then personally I would take the national agreement as the accepted way of working.

Are saying that you are not tied to a local agreement if you haven't personally signed it?

No he's saying if the Unit have not agreed it, and with the rep not having signed it off, then national agreements hold the field. I don't think even a rouge manager can EA this rubbish.

Whenever I'm 'offered the chance of an early finish', I always refuse and stay 'til my time.
Except I don't because the boss never wants to stay so I still go early and owe nothing.
It's their job to occupy my time until my finishing time, if they can't MANAGE that, it's not my problem, and I am not going to suffer because of it.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

Spot on Gremlin. If everyone took the same attitude, none of this crap would even be mentioned. We have had folks imposing their own banking of hours in our office. (As they feel guilty for not completing their hours). For f.ck sake, what next.

Maybe a local holiday in your area that happened to coincide with the English bank holiday? I was working on Monday as Glasgow take a local holiday at the end of September in place of the August bank holiday

Its always the same, they tell you off for coming back early, but they'll never thank you or acknowledge when you come in early or work over you time!

And why would they 'thank you' for coming in early?

And why would anyone come back early? There is no point ; and that is why we have lost (and keep on llosing jobs)

But ; hey ho .. no f***er really cares in my office . Just as long as they can carve up the job and do 'ghost overtime'

And I get sneered at for coming in on my time and not doing lapsing. Beggars belief really that one can work with people that wish to shoot themselves in the foot... and then complain that ........fill in any appropriate words

Mind you ; our revision is due to go live next month. Maybe some smiles will be wiped from faces.
