Bit worried cos im a newish starter and after my six week training ill be a reserve and one week ill be doing firms which im.presuming is van duty going around delivering parcels to the firms.!
Im not from the area so what type of training will I get? How long are you usually out for? Im guessing its at least 2hrs because Ive only a bit of a walk to do after it. Bit worried that ill just get shown once and then im on my own.
Can anyone who does firms confirm what it intails?.

Firms will be all mail to those firms probably on an industrial estate.
if you are lucky you will be given a day's training on it with the normal postie( so you can find the doors etc ), or you may find that the normal postie will list all the delivery points in order or if you are unlucky, you will be left to your own devices and will have to try and work it out as you go alone ( hopefully though this will not happen )
if you do get a chance to go round with the normal postie, take a note pad and sketch as you go along where the buildings etc are if you can.

ill try and get a list in order of industrial.estates and firms within that. like I say im not from the area so i might have to use a nav for a day or two. As long as i get an order. Ive been told i will get some training whether thats one day or more who knows. How many is the average firm and industrial.estate drops per day?

all depends on the size of the industrial estate TBH.
the one in the town I live in has approx 400 units in total where as the town I work in has around 75 unit's to deliver to.
put it this way, if you can't complete, say so before you go out, and they will hopefully ( depending on your DIM ) take off some of it or offer to pay you overtime ( should you want it ) or failing that tell the DIM that you will not complete within your hours ( hopefully though (s)he will sort it out so some is taken off the walk.
But don't worry yourself about it until the day you are due to do it :)

Google maps "street view" may be of some help.
Make a note of your route on your first day, then navigate your way around your round using street view until you know it well.

How do they decide who does firms and rurals? Nearly 2 years in the job I've still haven't even been trained to drive the vans? My biggest fear is doing the town centre, all those shops, think I would probably quit and walk out.

Expecting to get a nice little rural duty after only 2 years in is a bit ambitious... I'm not complaining at all, I love doing walking duty in the quiet areas of town. I don't want a rural duty, just wondering why some people get chosen for them and others don't?
