3 long days to 5 short days.

Hi. Ive been on 3 long days since I started 8 weeks ago and now we have just started the park and loop in our DO. Just looked at our rota for the next two weeks and im on 5 shorter days on a 25hr contract and im down as a reserve. Is this the norm for part time posties and will this now be a permanent thing? Also what is usually the starting time for these shifts? 9.30am? If it is a permanent thing then wont I ever get to do any sorting anymore?

what duty did u sign for, they have to give u 30 days notice to change your hours.

All our PT staff except 2 work a 5 day week.

No.No notice. Just saw it on the rota board that in 2 weeks time im down for 5 days and that im a reserve although I have a set walk for that week. At the end of the day im happy to have a job but will that mean im not going to be doing much sorting anymore as ill be starting pretty much when everyone is ready to go out?

Ps.Ive only been doing one duty since i started 2 months ago but weve just introducted park and loop so this week ive been prepping/walking different duties.

well if youve had a revision you gotta sign to a duty, if you are a reserve then you cover whatever hours they want so they can pretty much make u work 3 longs or 5 shorts, unless u signed into a duty which isn't reserve.

I suppose as a 5-day part-timer, you will have most of your walk (bar packets, missorts, redirection and kill offs) thrown out for you. However, this does not always happen.

You should try not to come in too early because management and the people that are supposed to throw out for you will take as an excuse not to do the job properly or to completion.

In a P&L system, (pair-walks), you might be lucky that the person prepping your walk will also be your partner. In that situation he/she might have a vested interest in doing a good job so that you both can go out in time. Either way, try not to be bullied into coming in early just to satisfy your partner or to keep up with the Joneses'.

It doesnt. my contract is 23.40 hrs INCLUDING meal breaks!. From 2 weeks time ill be upto 25hrs. So if im on 5x5hr days how then could that include meal breaks then as in my contract?? So far my 3 days I get 40 minutes break per day.

Over 5 days 5 hours a day should get I believe 30 minutes per day but could be 20 minutes. Someone will confirm

Actually in answer to a previous poster ive just gone back into my applications and I had applied for 6.30 to.2.30 over 3 days. So would they be allowed to just change that over 5 without consulting?

Not really and they can't really up your hours without your say so.....but.
There's always a but,you're a newbie I think and I take it still on your 6 month trial period,probably also a fixed term contract so your job security isn't great at the moment.
Speak to your rep before you jump in with both feet.
Try to get it sorted softly,softly first.

To be honest I think im gonna have to bite the bullet. I remember my rep telling me a month ago that my hours will be increased to 25.Correct me if im wrong but a 25hr contract is over 5 days where as less than that is usually long hrs but a lot less days. Im actually losing out because im 15 miles away from the DO and what I gain in hrs i'll lose in fuel costs and more. I would have preferred to stay on 3 because then id be able to learn the frames but coming in at the death i'm only gonna learn the walks.

As regards your getting a break. I suppose your delivery should be about 4 hours or so. You should be entitled to 20 minutes paid break, so that will dictate how much time you spend in the office.

If 4 hours delivery span, you should be be spending no more than 30 minutes (give or take 5 minutes) in the office in the morning. The more your delivery span the more prepping that should be done for you - in theory!

If you add the time for admin at the end of the round then a 25 hours part-timer will even struggle to achieve the 20 minutes. In our office, 24 hour contracts were bumped up to 27.5 hours to make things workable.
