What does 'Picking up duties mean'?

Was told my hours will be increasing slightly because ill be picking up duties, the ones that arnt their hours will stay the same. Didnt wanna act dumb by asking what that meant,iam a bit of a newbie so not really heard of that termanology before.

I don't think you 'get told' that your hours are increasing. You have a contract, and you can be asked if you would like to increase the hours of your contract. Don't know what 'Picking Up' means.
