how much training should you get ?
does anyone know how much training you should get on doing a collection?
know someone who got one days training on a collection that over 2 hours long does not seem anywhere near the right amount

i had no training just handed a big bunch of keys and a list of post offices firms and some vague pillar box locations

I believe you used to be entitled to 3 days training on any particular duty. Day 1 Follow your Trainer and just watch/make notes. Day 2 Prep & Deliver under supervision (i.e share the workload). Day 3 Prep & Deliver, with your Trainer following you around (Unless you make a total cockup...like starting to deliver n the wrong street)!
Nowadays they just say. "Well take it out and do your best, if you go over just book it". Now this is VERY clever...because they've basically got 24 hours (3 x 8 hrs) to play with. So unless you've claimed 8 hours OT everyday (for your 3 day training period) your Manager is going to have saved on his budget!

Collection training is a bit different from delivery. I will say 2 days minimum - first day to watch and learn and second day to work under supervision.
However, it depends on how experienced the trainee is - has the trainee done collection before, is the trainee familiar with the associated rounds and offices/shops (easier to do collection when you are a reserve*) and how confident is the trainee with driving, time deadlines and dealing with customers and then of course the scanning and/or PDA part.
Winter is not a good time to go collecting in some of the rurals where the postboxes might be embedded in walls and some possible covered with vegetation (you remember a postbox somewhere during training then out there on your own with traffic around you and in semi-darkness - but can't seem to find the darn thing)

they have never done a collection before and do not know the area that well
if they make a mistake on the collection surely it would not be there fault.
I don't believe that it is enough training.
