How many households?

Hi Guys, im a postman from switzerland. Ïm very interested, how the post in other country works =) i also have some friends who work as posties in germany.
So, its really cool, to be here, at the RM Forum.

My question is, how many households do posties in citys have, and how many adressed letters would they then deliver? In advantage of course =)
I deliver mail in a village close to bern. I have around 700 households with a long way to drive =) and i would deliver around 1800 adressed letters in advantage.

We have up to six households in our office per week but I don't know if other offices have more ,we have six days to deliver them,as for addressed items this fluctuates daily with Wed/Thu being the busiest, as for numbers most addresses have several items including letters/magazines and packets,as for actual addresses the average in our office is 450 but other offices are different hope this helps. I think he means households literally, not door to doors!

600 seems about average but with the revision, we have van share so two posties doing around 1200. Obviously less if the area has a lot of detached houses, farms etc.

Don't forget UK we have to enter to the driveways and post the letter in front door (or post box next to door) Some country have postbox at the bottom of driveways which save lot of time.

Do you go deliver mail by foot? I mean, in the city? Or with a bycicle? We have awesome trikes. They are really amazing. Here is

depending on the way of the land Ie graient or flat then we use to use Cycles a lot , but Royal mail are moving away from this and we use a big box on wheels called HCT or have two walks together and use a van shared between a driver and a walker suppose to use a Light weight trolley bit like a golf trolley. sometimes a van is used for a single delivery duty which usually used in rural area's
Is the swiss post privatised? how many days a week do you deliver?

Yes, swiss post is privatised... sadly... we deliver 6 days a week. But on saturday we just deliver A-Post, wich is the fast post. But we wont deliver unadressed mail, registered mail and so on...

When do you start in the morning and when are you done? We start usually at 5.30 and work till 2 or 3 p.m

6 days a week here too. No difference in the types of mail we deliver on Saturdays although it's possible to deliver some earlier in the week to get an early finish.


Everybody seems to start/finish at different times depending on local issues. I start around 7 and finish around 3 pm.

Yes, we have a union. But we also had it, before we were privatised.

Those trikes would have the mail stolen from them over here we use opel corsa vans and have 1500 delivery points but we have two postal workers to do the area it is called "park and loop" hope this helps you.

Security would be a big issue though, perhaps you're just too honest in Switzerland
