ROMEC Cleaner on the IPS?

So this week I've been sent to another office to cover someone who's off sick. The town I usually deliver in is pretty flat, but this office is in a really hilly seaside town, and the damn hills are hellish

Anyway, there's a woman at this new office who was dressed in black, not in RM uniform - and when the second wave of mail came in she sorted most of it herself on the IPS (pretty fast as well!) - and I'd seen her sorting packets earlier. I asked another guy who she was (I thought maybe she was a manager or something, since she wasn't in uniform), and he said:

'Oh, that's the cleaner.'

So I said I'd seen her sorting mail, and he said: 'Yeah, she's probably better at it than most of us!'

Maybe this is normal, I don't know, but it doesn't happen in my DO, so it kinda surprised me a little bit!

our cleaners have difficulty picking up a broom let alone a letter.

Ours delivers, does the Locker/callers etc. Dunno wot sorta Contract this is, but seems to be Partial Romec/Partial RM.

Seems a bit weird to me, but then who am I to say?

What is the union doing about it? The work described is purely for OPGs and any time spent by the cleaner doing that work means that hours are lost to postmen/women. As for ROMEC what chance their survival after privatisation when other firms will tender for the contracts

Well oddly enough I thought the same at first but we did have a cleaner who did take out parts of a delivery on a rare occasion - wouldn't be allowed now but times and people were more laid back then.

I'd actually really ask why are Managers doing the same ... and the Union do ef all about it.

But it is a novelty having a cleaner doing a Managers job. Maybe there is scope there?

BTW: Our cleaner , not only does a great job; she is a lovely and vibrant person

Our cleaner is usually asleep in his own office, no joke at all. He must have the cushiest job in RM, push a mop round for an hour then go and fall asleep with the TV on!

He would fall about laughing if asked to do posties work!

Nope, I'm deadly serious. She was sorting packets today (not for the whole duration, but for about 10 mins). I was surprised at it myself, which is why I created the thread.

If it's true, it's definitely wrong. Unless there are some on mixed RoMec/RM contracts, but I've never heard of that.

They can't get the cleaners to clean in my office, let alone anything else.
