According to the news today Royal Mail workers will be ballotted on strike action against privatisation plans.
Does anyone think a strike would result in a reversal of the decision to sell RM off?
Personally I don't think anything postive could come out of such action but am I wrong?
How will YOU vote and if it's yes what do think a strike would achieve? If your vote would be no, why?

If the result is to take IA, then I think it may make investors wary.
It will also make RM more willing to actually negotiate with the union in my opinion, as they are desperate to avoid IA.
I will vote yes, and am willing to walk out tomorrow.

Undoubtedly it is difficult for those who are part time or on temporary contracts during a period of industrial action. However they can look forward to a long life of part time work if we are privatized or worse! Never easy to lose money or a days pay but let's be honest sometimes to make gains you have to make short term sacrifices. The CWU comes in for a lot of criticism at times and sometimes rightly so but try to imagine what RM would be like as an employer without a union behind us and shiver!!!

It is by no means a foregone conclusion that Privatisation will actually happen even though the relevant legislation has been passed. The real issue is WHEN a sale takes place. Mandelson under Labour bottled it and I think Industrial Action on a scale 'not seen before' would deter potential investors and defer the inevitable and buy us all time. It's the best we can hope for. The current Labour Party have also walked away from the re-nationalisation issue and Ed Milliband is, in my opinion, history. The recent change in Labour's policy is not helpful to the CWU and the wider Union movement and he will pay the price at the next General Election.
Quite a few of my work colleagues are loathe to take strike action as they think the current pay offer is 'reasonable' and there is also talk of RM improving the year 1 offer to 2.9%. A lot of these guys are worried about loss of earnings for no real reward and think the CWU & RM shafted us last time for little benefit. A reasonable point of view.
Very few see the wider picture and I think the CWU still have a lot of work to do to convince the membership that Industrial Action is necessary and will be beneficial. Despite Government and RM assurances that the USO will be protected by legislation - not many people realise that with the decline in letters (recently revised downward from 7% to 4% p.a for the flotation) will mean the USO will not operate 6 days a week. In 5 years time at 4% p.a, a 20% drop will have taken place - I forecast OFCOM making a recommendation to Parliament that 'it is in the public interest' to reduce deliveries to 4 or 5 days a week' and their recommendation WILL be voted through both Chambers and passed with just a few bleats. A premium service will be introduced for urgent deliveries and the public will cough up in the absence of an alternative.
The pension issue - it is clear and also very understandable that few ordinary CWU members have a grasp of the Pension Proposal and the 'misappropriation' of the £2.2 billion that is about to take place. So CWU please enlighten them ! Note : The Courier has upped that stakes and is now threatening the worse case scenario of closure.
The promise of a 3 year agreement which already 4 months late - so really a 32 month agreement and then what - all Hell will be let loose by RM.
Point of Interest - If the Government sell its majority stake - Let's say is it 41% with 10% shares owned by staff making a total of 51% owned by this group of shareholders and 49% Government. Just how are the new investors going to inject private capital WHEN the Government, the other major stakeholder, say it has no funds to invest ? As a new investor I would be seeking parity among investor classes. i.e. I invest £1 and the Government do likewise based on the relative size of shareholdings.
It really is still all to play for and would be investors will be put off by a workforce that does not wholly embrace the idea of Privatisation - they have alternatives - it is up to us to make sure they choose them instead of RM !

I just hope that if it comes to IA it's not that ridiculous one-day-a-week rubbish. That gets us nowhere. If we are going out we need to go out and stay out until we get what we want or it will all be for nothing yet again!

While I wholeheartedly agree in principal with an all out stoppage, in practice many of us could not afford to go out indefinitely. I would also hazard a guess that in our office (150 people) a series of one dayers would be pretty well supported, but anything more would see a rapid return to work. Depressing, but true.
We've got a great opportunity here to show the government that we're a bit p*ssed off but its got to be done right.

3 day rotating stoppages can do it at least we will still get some money in to survive on and rotating between business units, delivery 3 days, distribution 3 days, processing 3 days some of them can over lap a day or two that would really put the spanners in the works.

Strike is not the answer .... You just can't beat them ... even it YES vote ... I will cross the picket line. Privatisation will have to happened and thats it ... ist no good striking ... no good what so ever. So on the ballot paper I will put " NO ". #This is my the way I am thinking now .. I might change my mind later... who knows?
