CAN IT BE DONE
if you were to do the job properly, using all the methods royal mail want you to, ie lwt, p&l, safe systems of work(stopping at every door to filter the mail) no cutting coners, could your delivery be done in the time alloted to you????

Yes, albeit on days that do not have a heavy call rate or lots of attendence call items. I've manged it a few times recently on walks that normally need a fair chunk of o/t to complete.

Re: CAN IT BE DONE
I have done rurals on & off for 30 odd years but have never done it properly (seatbelt on - seatbelt off - lock van - unlock van - at every stop - work from the back of the van ect ). I dont rush or spoil the job either. Has anyone done a rural the correct way ? How much does it add to the delivery span ?

So no then! Of course it can be done on easier days, surely its the heavier days that are the test of the system.IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:Yes, albeit on days that do not have a heavy call rate or lots of attendence call items. Oh yes it can. On the CSS some of us are following the book to the letter...ie SSoW & SOP. Re: CAN IT BE DONE
I was trained on my rural by someone who didn't do it by the book, and the delivery was taking me about 4hrs 30 mins or so to complete when I started doing it on my own. After a few weeks, I started doing the delivery properly and it usually takes an extra 20-30 minutes longer than it did previously. I suppose it depends how many times you're in and out of the van on your particular delivery.Brains wrote:I have done rurals on & off for 30 odd years but have never done it properly (seatbelt on - seatbelt off - lock van - unlock van - at every stop - work from the back of the van ect ). I do get the occasional snide comment from fellow employees along the lines that I'm "taking the p@&s" because others are known to complete the delivery more quickly. There's one lunatic in particular who finishes up to an hour earlier than I do because in addition to not following the delivery rules, he drives recklessly and at dangerous speeds along narrow country lanes and driveways/tracks. I know, because I get regular complaints from my customers when he's covering my days off/holidays.

The customers should be complaining to your DOM, there's nothing you can do about it. You notice how quick the management are to test "slow" OPGs but I've never heard of them going out with a speedy Gonzales to check how it is they can complete an hour early.......if they do it legitimately then there are lessons to be learned..............if not then there are lessons to be learned of a different nature.Ozzvaldo wrote:I was trained on my rural by someone who didn't do it by the book, and the delivery was taking me about 4hrs 30 mins or so to complete when I started doing it on my own. In the past I've done it for several months. Either overtime or cut off.

Re: CAN IT BE DONE
When I was tested on my delivery last year, my manager was perfectly happy with the way I drove, my organisation of the mail and my walking speed when delivering. When the subject of early finishes achieved by cover staff was discussed during the test it was simply brushed off as, "It's just the way they do it", and, incredibly, "I used to drive like a nutter when I used to do rurals as well" Ah yes, those good ol' job and knock days.dvbuk55 wrote:The customers should be complaining to your DOM, there's nothing you can do about it. SSOW and sop will be in a folder in your office (somewhere) admin office or managers office more than likely. You can also print a copy off from the intranet :)

Re: CAN IT BE DONE
not as bad as me when I was on hols, union rep did my round, drove like a madman every day to get done a bit early, arrive back at work to find my frame has been changed with extra delivery points on,now our bent union rep has jacked it in being a rep and has now got a transfer to another local office doing afternoon collections, now my duty is a complete jokeOzzvaldo wrote:I was trained on my rural by someone who didn't do it by the book, and the delivery was taking me about 4hrs 30 mins or so to complete when I started doing it on my own.
