If a gate lock will not lock can the postman get in trouble for not locking it

No.
You should always try to leave the gate as you found it but some of these gates are worse than a safe lock.
I've lost count of the number of times a customer has said "It's easy if you know the trick...you lift this bit,push that bit,hold this bit with your knee etc...".

One of our lot broke her wrist falling over a gate hanging on one hinge. Operation, scars, sick leave, light duties. Nowt happened to the property owner except he had to fix his gate. I went over a gate recently, owner hadn't fixed it as a Postie had broke it the previous day. The gate was another one hinge wonder for ages before said Postie 'broke' it.

last time i went over a one hinge wonder ,,i kicked it off the one hinge in anger ,, funnily its never been re-hung

If the one hinge gates don't get you then the wonderful chin height hanging baskets will. Can't beat a full hanging basket in the face after turning round from posting a letter.

I once tried to open a gate that was manky and moldy and looked like it was falling to bits. Couldnt open it first time, so my hands got filthy so i nudged it with my hip. Stupid thing is, i nudged it a wee bit to hard and went straight through the gate, In doing this the gate that was attatched to a 6 metre long fence also pulled down with it. I thought oh god look what ive done. So i knocked on the door to explain to the owner what had happened. They laughed and told me that the builders were coming out next day anyway to make a new fence phew

I really don't get the philosophy behind gates. So many houses on my round have installed gates presumably to make them feel safe. Do they make you safer? Some are electronic, but most aren't.

Seems to me that the owners get it all wrong. The gates are open for months on end and then they go on holiday, half close the curtains and shut the gates......OK boys were in here....lets get the tele out first...

If it don't close with one pull, then it stays open.

I get annoyed at people shouting at me for not closing their gate, they have no dogs or children, it isn't keeping anything in.. I always leave them as I find them.

Worst is when its wet and you end up with filth all over you if its an older bit of wood.
