Hi. new postie, just needing a bit of advise please.

Hi there, I started last week as a postman(with some driving) and was with my coach for the 3 days last week. After 4 days off ill be back on thursday but on my own. I'll list what ive been taught, but is there anything else i'm gonna need to know or will this be it.

Start with sequenced mail, then sort manual mail in, sort packets out and turn mail round where the packet is going, sort out redirections and kill off's, prepare the leaflets for the day, bundle and bag up and put sacks into Yorkies for driver and pass company mail over,prepare slips for any recorded deliveries.


Also i have to put sacks into the York containers as the driver will drop them off at the grey boxes for me. what happens if my sorting is 15-20mins slower than everyone else?, Does the driver just wait for my mail sacks because id holding over postmen up surely if the driver has to drop other postmen's sacks off. I don't think I would be late its just that im not gonna be as quick as someone who knows their frame like the back of their hand.

Don't worry fella, your new, so people will make allowances, you'll probably be faster than some of us old timers.

You'll get faster as you get used to the frame and the way of doing things.

I come in, do redirections, sign for specials and get van key, bag up, chuck it in the van, off I go...

When I get back I do dead mail, and chuck up any D2Ds I have left/Time fore

You can join on line at the CWU website. For the cost of less than a pint a week its going to be worth it esp with all the trouble brewing.

I read your post and I think you have got everything covered. Don't try to rush as you will only mess up. Managers have an allowance budget for new starters as everyone is slow to start with.

Thats good and ill check the website and join.!!! Im glad ive pretty got everything covered. Id hate to go in thursday and then totally forget something. Also regarding overtime, my contract is 24hrs a week(8hrs a day) so that im guessing will be 6.30 til 2.30 over 3 days. When do I put overtime down,is it after every 15 mins over? I don't think I will actually go over 2.30 but if I get held up or something and I come back for say 2.40pm do I put down for 10 mins overtime?

how do you do that? I downloaded an online form which you can fill in and send back. The online calculator says I pay £2.13pw which is what I wrote on the online form. I dont see anywhere on the form about political contribution. My form is filled in but not sent as yet as I dont want any other payments been taking out.Also will I be eligible or should I talk to my union rep first?

Book for every minute you go over, sometimes it feels a bit silly booking "only" 5 minutes but even just once a week that's 4 hours (or£40ish) over a year

Dont forget you're also entitled to a 40 min paid meal break aswell if you work over 7hrs 1 min per day so if you dont take it & finish at half 2 then you're due 40 mins overtime so book it down when you get back

On the Sickness Procedure if you think he needs to know it, perhaps a little explanation might help him.

Personally on a 3 day week and as he won't get sick pay for the first 12 months, its not something that should concern him till he has his feet under the table.
