When does newbies get a chance to do overtime?

Started as a Postie on Thursday so i've done 3 days with a coach. Im contracted to 24hrs and 23 mins on a 4 month contract (3 days a week) and I did mention to my manager that once i'm up to speed then don't hesitate to get me in for overtime. Personally i'm pretty much struggling financially on the hours i'm on,doesn't leave me anything to live on really and any overtime would be a boost for me. Ive been put on the same walk for at least 6 weeks and I love it,getting upto speed and my coach was pleased with me. I asked him about overtime and he told me to learn the job first which is fair enough but even if there isn't any overtime available at the DO then what about Mail Centres? My cousin is a line manager at the Leeds Mail Centre and tells me they will be setting on a lot of staff soon because the the surrounding Mail Centres are closing down.Maybe to work one of my days off down there?? Also thinking about a transfer(eventually) to the centre too when jobs arise,is this possible or would I need to wait a a year or so? Id be happy staying at the DO as long as I do get overtime weekly but im guessing the money is at the Mail centres. Advise?

Plenty of OT everywhere. Might drop off a little over the summer period but you should be fine for extra hours so if that's what you want/need you'll be ok.

That's positive. Because I only work 3 days a week I feel like i'm 'helping out' and there would be plenty of people in front of me when it comes to overtime. Like I say I do wanna learn the job first,was thinking after a few weeks I would like to think I could get a 4th day in.

I would suggest wait at least a few weeks to get a feel for the job before you commit to extra work.

Let it be known to all your line managers that you are available to do overtime, eventually they will find some for you. Then you will soon find that they come to you more and more. Soon you will be fed up or unable to do all the overtime they want you to do. But whatever you do, don't turn it down or you will get the look. The look that says you are a dissapointment, the look that says you have killed their first born child. And then you will be persona non grata. Enjoy Royal Mail, it's a laugh a minute ;-}.

all newbies do loads of overtime i wouldnt worry about you will soon be doing half a walk overtime everyday

put your name on the availability list which should be displayed and o/t should be allocated according to aggregate. if not, inform union rep, if your in the union.

Come to my office as one of the linoes is well known for "picking" on newbies to do extra as he knows most won't say "no".

Just wait until Autumn then it is better to do overtime - it is too hot. I noticed in our office the overtime dropped a lot recently. I haven't had any request to do overtime for about 2 months.
