As the mercury continues to soar across the UK, concerns have been raised about the extreme temperatures CWU members working outdoors have to endure. The union's campaign about the importance of safe working in extreme weather has been re-launched to make sure members are aware of the risks associated with overexposure to heat and sunshine.

CWU health and safety officer Dave Joyce cautions on the dangers, saying: "Working outdoors in hot summer months poses special hazards for outdoor workers who must be protected against heat stress, sun exposure, dehydration and other hazards.

"The issue of working in extreme weather conditions has been repeatedly raised with employers, particularly Royal Mail, and a motion passed at this year's annual conference committed the union to seek provision of sunscreen for all staff who work outdoors. Royal Mail need to make sure our delivery workforce know the potential hazards and how to manage them.

"We urge all our members to make the necessary provisions to work safely by covering up exposed areas of skin where possible, where a factor of at least 15, but preferably 30, sunscreen and make sure they have enough water on them when out on their rounds. I would also suggest taking short breaks in shaded areas if out during 11am - 15:00pm - the times when UV rays are most intense.

"If you are unsure about any of the advice provided speak to your health and safely rep before you head outdoors," he added.

The Sun Cream will have to come out of your own pocket -unless you can get your branch to purchase some.You can refer the management to Royal Mails Safe System of Work which says to seek shade during high temperatures,tell them that is what you intend to do but point out these breaks in the shade will mean the delivery will take you longer and you will have to cut off.Thats what a member in my office did this week and so far theres been no comeback.

To be honest,I wouldn't want Royal mail to provide it as their track record shows they would buy it in bulk from the cheapest supplier,so we would all be walking round like mobile flypaper and still getting burnt,thanks but no thanks RM I would rather buy my own at £15 to £20 a bottle,my health is worth that,but I am going to say on Monday that I will be taking a shade break and will need to leave some of the walk.

i had the same with plasters went to the first aid box for one , told by a manager that they dont supply them in case some ones allergic to them , so i bled all over the mail great service to the customers .

so now i take my own

All first aid kits should have plaster's in them,it is the responsibility of the managers to make sure they are fully stocked.

Very disappointed with CWU HQ, they should be talking to RM about getting the deliveries out of the door earlier in the summer

I don't think this site is for me and still can't quote so must be too old to do this. I suppose one good thing is I have learnt to use the ipad a little better.
