management,why cant you get your heads together and plan for all mail to arrive at delivery offices 4am approx. everybody in sorting out on delivery 5.30 am deliver all mail first then deliver all packets parcels tracked recorded specials etc last,finished done,this weather around lunchtime is terrible ,we have just lost a collegue in Lincoln due to the heat ,so why cant we work these hours in extreme heat weather conditions,think of delivery staff,whilst you've got your cold air fan going on your desk.

Why can't we deliver earlier full stop,, say start at 5 am . We'd get all the customers in etc . And I'd gt to see my beloved blues !

While there is a profusion of threads about the hot weather and starting earlier and the possible effects of the heat and who should be facing prosecution, people seem to have overlooked one very simple fact.

You are in charge of your Health and Safety.

Consequently if you don't feel it is reasonable to go out or stay out on delivery you don't have to.
Nobody can force you to go out on delivery.
Nobody can force you to do double shifts.

You are grown-ups.
You are responsible for your own actions.
How difficult is it to say that you are struggling in the heat, that you don't feel you can complete a delivery?

So please use your cojones.

Deliveries should be as early as possible, as a matter of course.
Later deliveries gives people a very bad impression.
As for avoiding the hottest part of the day, that has to be the no-brainer of all no-brainers.

if royal mail sent a leaflet out saying during hot weather there mail would be delivered anytime after 5.30 am,anthing that needs a sig or wont fit through a letterbox will be delivered after 8am,simple really ?

My own theory about later start times, is you can push more mail through the system as you have a longer time window to get it to the delivery office, to me this can be the only logical explanation.
Look how busy Saturdays are now compared to only a few years ago.

mail centres cannot get all the work to the delivery offices that early now...our final dispatch leaves the centre at 6 am , i do wish it could be done earlier because i fully agree with delivery staff being out earlier in this heat...

Clash I myself have used this argument but there are easily bullied people out there that are highly susceptible to their tactics. You also have to consider people on short term contracts, or in their first six months, it wouldn't be wise for these people to rock the Royal Mail boat. Include offices with a poor union presence or people struggling financially or just simply worried about losing their jobs or overtime and you have more than 80% of the workforce not wanting to upset their Line Manager.

Can you imagine them telling a manager that they don't fancy doing the whole delivery because its too hot?

Of course it's easy to say but at least point out the possible ramifications. And there are nearly always ramifications for putting a Royal Mail manager in their place, or worse, making them finish off your round. This is not Kansas, you will piss them off.

So that might be, perhaps, why people go out when they don't feel up to it against the obvious advice. Not everyone has the tenacity to take Royal Mail on.

why do royal mail not treat this hot weather in the same way as they treat the winter they have a adverse weather condition plan for heavy snow in the winter is this not a adverse weather condition they should at least supply us with bottled water ,sun block etc does this not fall under health and safety ,why do a lot of staff feel bullied into doing double shifts etc i feel very sorry for that guy and his family but how many people have had effects of the this hot weather sun stroke etc and not reported it or felt the need to go sick but just carried on regardless due to the back lash from there managers........ this is a job not a death sentence why do people still feel the need to run around like a headless chicken to get finished then brag about how long it took them i know there are people like this in every office but in this weather it is a very stupid practice ......... take your time ,take as many breaks as you need to,drink liquid the more you sweat the more liquid your body needs, use sun block and cover up

well said enzio when i started early i used to spend all afternoon in bed and i cannot do that anymore

I feel more knackered now finishing LATE afternoon,bring back early starts this = early finish,everyone happy including customers
