illegal driving?
A colleague at my office also works as a Night club doorman on a Friday night. On a Saturday morning he understanably looks absolutely knackered. He is driving a van by 0800, my question is, is this legal and should there be rest period as with lorry drivers before starting work?

Legally no for driving hours , legally yes if he is too tired to drive safely and causes an accident. Unfortunately he can only be held accountable after the accident 
Although your DIM does have a duty of care to him and other people if he knows or thinks he could be unsafe on the road due to fatigue.
