house alarm
Today I had a parcel for a customer, it wasn't recorded or tracked and I would happily leave it by the door in the area the house is. However as the residents where out and they had a porch, I thought I would try the porch and leave it in there.
The door was unlocked so I popped the parcel in, however the moment I opened the porch door the house alarm went off! They and the neighbours where out so I couldnt do much so I just carried on and about 20 mins later the alarm was off and back to normal.
I've left parcels in porches many times and even have notes stuck on doors saying to do so on occasions.
Is this something we are allowed to do? (either way I won't be doing it on this house again!)

Re: house alarm
Knowing the customer was away on holiday I launched the pack of contact lenses through the letter-box to ensure there was no chance of it getting jammed. Unfortunately, I set the house alarm off and it was a week before the alarm was switched off! Effing loud it was too, lol
Nothing to do with me I said to neighbour's the following day, it was like it when I arrived

No its not allowed. Its called doorstepping wherever you leave it (Green Bin, garden shed, out house etc)trevjim wrote:Today I had a parcel for a customer, it wasn't recorded or tracked and I would happily leave it by the door in the area the house is. Its also a disciplinary offence and can result in dismissal in the worst cases (repeat offenders, item stolen etc) . Its called failing to secure the mail, and leaving it in an area accessible to you, means its accessible to anyone and therefore not secure.
To be honest in this situation try a neighbour and/or leave a card. Also get ready to explain everything just in case the home-owner makes a complaint.

Re: house alarm
I had a house on an old walk that when you put the letters through the door the alarm would go off without fail and ring for 30 mins.
still at least their neighbour's knew there post was about to arrive.

Re: house alarm
Last week opened a garage door and the alarm went off. Would you say leaving a packet in a garage is regarded as doorstepping? The garage is integral and therefore I would have left the parcel inside the property. If so, then surely any delivery through a mailbox where the door is unlocked can also be deemed to be doorstepping.

Garage - Yes if you can't secure it after.
Open door - I don't deliver it then I either shout "Post" and wait a short while and hand it over, if no response I endorse Unsafe and reattempt delivery next day.
Honest

Re: house alarm
but surely if there is a letterbox on the porch then thats the point of delivery, if you posted mail through the letter box how are you to know its not secure?TrueBlueTerrier wrote:No its not allowed. by the same theory a packet should be the same right? you wouldn't be expected to secure it if it goes through the letter box

Re: house alarm
You make a good point, the only reason I opened the porch door was because the parcel was too big for the letterbox, so in terms of is it secure, it's irrelevant how it got there as the end result is the sameleeroy5312 wrote:but surely if there is a letterbox on the porch then thats the point of delivery, if you posted mail through the letter box how are you to know its not secure?TrueBlueTerrier wrote:No its not allowed. Re: house alarm
The counter argument is that when you put letters through a letter box, or a packet that fits, its a reasonable judgement to conclude that its secure. You can't after all check every door.
The problem of opening a porch, is that by opening you now know its not secure.
Not trying to pick an argument, just presenting how it will be thought through by management at a fact finding.
Still I can't stop you, and if you know the risks you're all old enough to make your own decisions.

Ye I can imagine if it did get stolen the managment would go down that route. We are encouraged in our office to leave as many parcels as we can when the residents are out if we feel it's safe.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:The counter argument is that when you put letters through a letter box, or a packet that fits, its a reasonable judgement to conclude that its secure. If I were you, I'd prepare myself for the worse, as you have no way of knowing if the porch owner is one of those people who likes to complain about everything, even when, on the surface, things seem perfectly acceptable.trevjim wrote:Today I had a parcel for a customer, it wasn't recorded or tracked and I would happily leave it by the door in the area the house is.
