Is it just me ... or do certain things happen when people have a holiday week ...

i.e. "going sick" on the Saturday before ...

leaving me (1000 starter) getting a desperate phone call at 0630 hrs ... on a Saturday ...

You could ignore the call. I remember years ago when i first started and i was getting calls at 5am on my landline waking every1 up to see if i could work, glad we have the silent mode of mobile phones now and not giving out my home number

Why do you say by f/t staff?
I don't condone people doing this, especially if they are just pulling a fast one. And we know it happens, but all S/L has to be treated as genuine.
If someone is actually sick, then I see nothing wrong with it.
Just recently, there has been an increase people ringing in on their return dates in my office. One person had quite a while off.

Phone on silent or off the hook and your 630 Saturday morning calls are a thing of the past.

As far as knocking off before annual leave starts I can't say I'm aware of this being a large scale problem but given the difficulty in booking days off then I'd assume that those who aren't genuinely ill have a flight to catch and despite often giving notice months in advance RM refuse to allow workers to take their entitled leave, despite assurances in The Way Forward that they would increase flexibility in this.

It may not be the honest thing to do but it's often the only way. Especially if you've got kids and your other half works as well. Like others have said, turn off your phone and it's no longer a problem for you.
