Tomorrow or to be more precise.....

ERS have advised us that the count of the ballot papers should be concluded at approx 15.00 on the 4 July 2013. Following this they would then be in a position to produce the required ballot certificate and declare the results between 16.00 -17.00 on the 4 July 2013. Once the results have been verified they will then be delivered by hand to the General Secretary.On receipt of the certificate, the General Secretary will then make arrangements for an LTB containing the results to be immediately sent to all branches by email.

thanks lads im not getting excited, im not the only one that was disappointed by some of the same old hangers on and deadwood that are running again. Some branches really need to sit down and think, is this really the best we can put up for such important positions. Or do we just roll over again and dont rock the boat.

I met a full time release representative just recently - he was in an advisory capacity within a joint team - he hadn't been on the shop floor for almost 15 years So are we going to get the same old same old - I would imagine so - the question is how do you break the mould and there are two definitions for that description.

Well DV I think we can all agree that the job has changed more in the last 5 years than in the 20 years before that so I think we have to ask ourselves what someone who has been away from the sharp end for 15 years actually brings to the table.

Union experience?
That's a highly debatable skillset certainly for some of them,having said that no-one tells a war story like a long time full release bod.

As Scrutineers appointed in accordance with Section 49 of the Trade Union and Labour
Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 (as amended), we are satisfied as to each of the matters
specified in subsection 52(2) with regard to the election. The following points should be
noted:
1. The person appointed under section 51A to carry out the storage and counting
of voting papers was Electoral Reform Services Limited.
2. The person appointed under section 51A to carry out the distribution of voting
papers was TUink Limited, 65 Leonard Street, London, EC2A 4QS and we are satisfied
with their performance.
3. A copy of the register of voters (as at the relevant date) was examined in
accordance with section 49(3). The examination took place at our own instance and
did not reveal any matter that should be brought to the attention of the trade union.
We would draw your attention to sections 52(4), 52(5), and 52(6). Section 52(4) requires that
a copy of this report be published and made available to all members of the union within a
three month period from today. This does not, however, mean that every member has to be
notified individually.

CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: "This ballot result is a damning rejection of the tired old way the CWU hold elections. The CWU is a democratic basket case and with well over 75% of the members who voted in the CB withholding their vote they have sent out a strong message to all in our union that the NEC/PEC elections are only benefiting vested interests.

Billy Hayes added: '“Today’s ballot result shows we have resounding support for changing how the CWU will be run in the future.
This is a strong message to take forward action in each area to improve the working lives of CWU members and protect the principles and transparency of a grass root union which our hard working members value.”

Pretty much shows what the members think of the election of PEC/NEC members when the turnout hovered on the 10% of voting - what a shambles. How do the union intend to engage the grass roots level and enthuse them to take part. There does need to be a total overhaul of the election system and those elected in truth. There should be a system where the election is for two years and no incumbent served beyond two terms, that is 4 years in total. In that way those members would have two years before becoming eligible for re-election and the same length of time at the sharp end and in their place would be someone directly from the sharp end.

I'm afraid that members of the PEC/NEC see it as a personal career move and NOT as a removable representative of the membership and it's time that changed.

Elected Unopposed - is a phrase that should make a Democratic Organisation nervous, or at least embarrassed.
