Why are some temp fixed contracts different?

Hi!! Well I finally have a job as a postman of which I start in a couple of weeks. The job might be a bit of a gamble as i'm giving up a permanent contact up for a family firm for a driving delivery company that pays just £7 per hr to Royal Mail on £8.58ph. My contract is 4 months though which takes it to November but some fixed term temp jobs are for 6 months. Does anyone know the reason why? I just hope my 4 month contract has a chance of being renewed if I perform well. I really want to make a career out of RM so it's a gamble I hope pays off for me. Id be so downheartened if it is just a 4 month contact ending so close to Christmas.

leading up to our busiest time of year Xmas November will be warming you up would say your likely to stay longer. I was taken on as 6 months contract and have now been informed I'm permanent. These short term contracs are basically a loophole to get shut if required but it's always the same at any company your on probation For 3 months. Congratulations ;-)

I was put on a 6 month contract after Christmas, it runs out next week but I've just received another one for 3 months which will run out in October. Would have liked another 6 months but I least I know I've got work for another 3 months.

I was on 3 monthly contracts for 2 years...I've been made permanent now...

I'd get back to the family firm and try and get your job back. RM is a horrible company to work for.

3 month contracts.....some people are lucky I am on 2 month contracts despite having been there nearly 18 months

Just turned 3 (three) years on temp (6 month then 6 month then 3 month ever since) ... not right happy ... especially as Lino told me permanent contracts were "on their way" ... and I know one guy (with less seniority than me) has gone permanent p/t ...

I sent the latest temp contract back to Pond Street Sheffield (ironically the home of Sheffield Poly - or whatever it's called these days - where I did my degree) dutifully signed ... but with a 'terse annotation' ref permanent contracts - no doubt it will eventually find its way back to my DO/DOM/Lino ... we wait ... we see ... we plod on ...

Got pay slip today though ...
