Some advice

I have not long been a postman. My problem is I am always the one asked to do extra. "Can you just prep a bit of this walk as well please" etc I have read other posts and people say don't moan just do your round etc. but is not as easy as that when the way they word it makes me feel like I have to do it.

One example we are lapsing a walk in the office due to the revision which is fine. But also they keep coming to me and ask me to take a bit of another posties round as they can't complete it. I'm all for helping out etc but I said its either the lapsing or the extra. The reply wasn't good saying I'm contracted 7 till 3 when actually my contract is until 7 till 1.

I rarely say no but when I do they seem to go in a mood etc but when I do it no thanks or anything. In the past i have worked my days off, done extra at other offices after my walk. Just some advice how to approach the situation as I am only 3 months into the job.

If you're not in the union, join it, then the Rep can help. If you are, seek his/her help/advice, or that of the Area Rep.

Point out you finish at 1, not 3. Presumably you're contracted for 30hrs a week. Therefore, if you're willing, you need ot. If not, you shouldn't have to, but say you can't because you have to go to dentist/doctors etc. (you're supposed to arrange these outside of work hours and have done-you can't cancel as it needs 24 hrs notice). Or you have to visit a family member that you care for, and it's simply not possible. Or you have kids to pick up.

Tell them you can't do ot all the time, but when you can you will, but want to be paid. They are basically bullying/intimidating you. You'd be surprised at just how effective standing up for yourself can be. The only down side is it will probably put you on the managers s**t list, so keep your nose clean.

start off by saying i have to finish on time since i have to do such and such and can't work extra -- they will get the picture after a while. also join the union and tell your rep this he may have a word with your DOM and put him in his place.

Stand up for yourself, NEVER do a favour to anyone, NEVER work for free if they want you to do extra bit they must pay you for that extra bit.

see this is were it gets hard somebody correct me if im wrong but no postman is contracted to the hours in a i.e. 7 till 1 or 6.45 till 2.45 like a lot of us on our contracts we get told its hours per week thats why its so easy for them to keep changing our start and finish times.so what you would need to do is work out if you want to work over that day and work over if not just say no.let them twist it all they want.they will try and bully you into it if you let them its all good if you just do it all the time for them but when you say no there attertude changers

The first few years in this job the hardest thing to do is to say "No, sorry can't"" But in the end, unless you want to be a doormat, its the best thing to do. In other jobs its good when the bosses come to rely on you, but the management style at RM is always to push and keep pushing, and that means at some point you have to push back just to gain some respect.

I have been doing this job for 3 1/2 half years and quit last week. It's a terrible job run by s**t managers for a crappy company.

My only advise is to stick to your guns. Don't work over your time. Tell them repeatedly that you finish at 1 and you will NOT go over.

I've been where you are. Done them tons of favours. Worked my days off and gone over loads of times to complete the job. The day you say you can't help them out is the day that all that extra stuff you've done over the years is forgotten about and your deemed unhelpful.

Be resolute. Stick to your time. Eventually they'll pick on some other poor mug.

But it is for some people. I don't even get asked anymore, because they know the answer. Some people, especially newbies, are unsure in situations like these. I have had to step in to defend one or two in recent times, due to the intimidation of managers. The point I was making is, if they find it hard to say no, a simple excuse may make the manager leave them be.

And, as an aside, I once had a manager who told me that, unless I give a reasonable excuse, I couldn't refuse.

Thanks for all your responses. With the "hours per week" comment, my contract says 7 - 1 in black and white. I started just before the revision and since it changed everyone's moaning, but yet always me who is asked. It is hard to say no but I have had enough. I do enjoy the job when I am out the office put it that way.

Are you part time if you are you may need the money if they will pay you for your time that is the minimum if not say no I have more important things I need to do with my time.
