Sack the fleet manager!

Post by raikky »

WE have around 20 nice brand new Fiat vans. There beautiful. really, i love them. im a full time leave reserve so everyweek im driving a different one everyweek. sometimes, a different one every day of the week. The best thing about them, they spend more time at the mail centre garage and broken down by the road side than they do being driven. These last 2 weeks im been covering a duty and when i drove the van out on monday i noticed it was sluggish. on tuesday the 2 lights for cat/dpf and engine management came on. This usualy happenes 2 times a week. When it does happen, we have instructions at the end of our duty to perform a force regeneration. takes about 10 - 15 minutes. sitting in the van working for nothing but its the future of royal mail apprently.

I cant tell you how many force regens ive had to perform. how many wasted minutes which equate to hours of overtime every day. But, this is moderisation, as i have been told. i cannot believe that some stupid idiot bought god knwos how many of these vans knowing that they would be used for deliveries and cover an average of 6 miles a day with about 5 - 10 stops a day (never allowing the engine to warm up at all). And, still keep his/her job? i dont know if this is down to one or a handful of people but a little researach ( such as i did before i bought my 2003 deisel :D ) would of told me stay well away. They are not fit for purpose for what we need them for.
The DPF problems all diesels with a dpf suffer must have cost this business loads. The van i drove this week broke down and went to the garage for the 4th time. hmm, its quite worrying since its now on 720 miles as of today. Is this seriously acceptable. it would be alright for the rurals duty to use one, sinve they cover 30 miles a day ( actually nto sure if it would be alright). but for normal deliveries, its a farce.

I also took note of how economical these vans are. the trip reading is telling me im getting 22 mpg. this is in a 1.3 turbo diesel. i drove a 2.8 litre LDV before and got about 26.

I cannot believe no one has been to blame for this. instead, were told if we fail to perform a force regen, we will face conduct. Actually the reason the van i used that broke down and went to the garage couldnt force regen because it was too far gone. even though no warning lights were on the dash. it says it all really.

So, well done to the dickhead who bought all these vans, or hired, leased them whatever. Even our own managers said petrols would of been better. or better yet, electric, lol. but you know royal mail... lol

I expect that whoever landed the "deal" on these vans got a hearty pat on the back for such skilled negotiation and a nice handshake :Very Happy

Before doing that I would get permission first. Even in a secure location wouldn't it breach RM guidelines on making sure the vehicle is secure. Just a thought.

I meant you should sit in the van during IPS in their time not ours

I suspect it's more likely they got a very thick plain brown envelope from the supplier.

To clear the DPF the vans are supposed to Rev at 2000+ for at least 40 minutes to an hour, (or do 50mph), apparently.
As has been said, the vans are unsuitable for the tasks they were intended.

I work for fms. And can tell you these vans are a headache. Big part of it is actually an issue with fiat as the system the vehicle is designed with isnt robust enough to cope with small stop start journeys where there us a small variation in revs and speed.

In order to stop the dpfs from clogging up. Normal operating temp has to be reached and high rpms are required for heat build up to burn the excess s**t from the filter.

In reality u need to give it major welly to be on the safe side. All vehicles with dpfs have this issue but tge fiats are more prone. We still have to do it to the partners, sprinters and experts.

But all in all the desicion to buy these heaps of scrap is unreal. Woukd like to have seen a trial of quality vans i.e. vw caddys or suchlike to compare to the peugeot and fiat crap currently being bought.

All modern diesels have dpfs due to our ever stricter emission laws.

Its a necessary evil
